Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul, by John Eldredge

Every little girl has dreams of being swept up into a great adventure, of being the beautiful princess. Sadly, when women grow up, they are often swept up into a life filled merely with duty and demands. Many Christian women are tired, struggling under the weight of the pressure to be a "good servant," a nurturing caregiver, or a capable home manager.

What Wild at Heart did for men, Captivating is doing for women. Setting their hearts free. This groundbreaking book shows readers the glorious design of women before the fall, describes how the feminine heart can be restored, and casts a vision for the power, freedom, and beauty of a woman released to be all she was meant to be. By revealing the core desires every woman shares-to be romanced, to play an irreplaceable role in a grand adventure, and to unveil beauty-John and Stasi Eldredge invite women to recover their feminine hearts, created in the image of an intimate and passionate God. Further, they encourage men to discover the secret of a woman's soul and to delight in the beauty and strength women were created to offer.

From Publishers Weekly
John Eldredge became the Robert Bly of evangelicalism with his blockbuster Wild at Heart. Now he teams up with his wife, Stasi, to encourage women to connect with their deepest desires. To facilitate this, the Eldredges reveal in the first chapter what every woman's three core desires are: to be romanced, to play a role in her own adventures and to display beauty. (This formula will be familiar to Eldredge's fans, as Wild at Heart offered a similar tripartite model of men's desires.) The rest of the book is an extended reflection on these three impulses. Drawing heavily on popular films to prove their points, the Eldredges warn that most women tend to become either controlling or needy. Godly women, in contrast, should see God as the ultimate lover, and look to Eve (and not, say, J. Lo) as their model. Also, women should form close, intimate friendships with one another, la Ruth and Naomi or the ladies in Fried Green Tomatoes. These are all unoriginal themes, which evangelical women's writers have been recycling for years. Christian readers who embrace a robust egalitarianism will not find the Eldredges' perspective congenial. Regardless, the book is likely to fly off the shelves, purchased by all those women who gave Wild at Heart to their husbands, brothers and dads. (Apr. 14)

Review
"Authors John and Stasi Eldredge interpret their own work with a brisk cadence that switches from John’s clear tones and pitch to Stasi’s youthful, vibrant vocal personality. Their energetic delivery captures their feminine view of women in relation to God with contrasting voices that match voice to mood with a male-female technique. Their depiction of assorted characters from movies and books supports their theories, which seem to border on pop psychology, rather than biblical content. They deftly deliver vivid but simple character sketches with a versatile range and skill that humanize God as a “lover” and “romancer.” Their lightly accented enunciation animates and freshens the entire reading, which emphasizes their woman-centered point of view."

It"s time you indulge in this!
By Becca
This book came to me as a recommendation, going through my singleness. The timing was surprisingly funny.
Anyway at first I was reluctant b/c I'm that feminist who's stuck up in her ideologies/ways of thinking & doesn't need another book that'll drain her strength through foolish arguments. Plus I just didn't have time for it!
Now to the one who fits the above description: Emerse yourself into the book!
-Trust me you won't regret it. The first chapters will actually engage your arguments, that's assuming you rarely agree with every statement that's said. Be inquisitive and ask Staci/John for clarification. Be the reader who says, "Well no, I disagree with you" or "Girl, you better explain what you mean before I..." or "How about you put it like this" or "Wow! Now that's my girl!" I know, that's how serious my reading got to lol.
-Be prepared to get some revelations about yourself. I'd suggest if you may, say a quick prayer for God to open the eyes of your heart and speak to you through Staci/John's book. It's no point to read this book for the sake of just reading. I'm just saying!
-Please have a pen & notebook, or if reading from a tablet, make use of the highlight/note-taking options! You'll thank me later lol.
-I enjoyed the authors' interpretation to the creation story and the Fall of man. Staci stresses the fact that Eve is the crown of creation, and continues to base everything she's goes through, on this fact. Ever wondered why females in society go through a lot? Well, the devil works day and night to fight against the crown of beauty, the crown of creation, Eve. Lucifer was once the most beautiful creation but after his fall, he became the angel of death. Eve on the other hand (created in God's beauty) is blessed with the gift of bringing life to the world. Won't Lucifer always be on her case seeking to destroy her due to jealousy? Sexual abuse, emotional abuse, you name it!
-The feminist part of me made sense of what I should be fighting for. Feminism in today's society has been given a negative light and even though this book doesn't address this topic, keep an eye out for the subtle points and make personal meaning out of each!
-Last but not least, this book sheds light on the amount of healing I should seek. Yes, our past should never dictate our future but it for sure explains our present. It helps to get closure, find healing, forgive yourself & others involved and move on. Grieving is healthy, and God is the best comforter in times of grief. One major lesson from my past, that this book helped point me out: Lack of grief is dangerous. The enemy uses it against you and this unknowingly or knowingly leads you deep into sin.

Not Another Guilt Trip
By D. S. Tolbert
Often women such as myself hit a circumstance in their marriages or lives where they feel something is broken. If you're like me you have many questions about your feelings of brokenness; why do you feel broken, are you actually broken, can you be fixed?

I read many books written to women on many of these topics and the majority of them were toxic. The solutions were band aid. They were solutions full of passivity and passes for male behavior. The attitude of "Woman, shut up and color" filled these books. They might not have said it outright, but that message was still there, at times in the subtlest of ways. These books heaped on the guilt, added to the pressure, and simply increased the hopelessness.

Not Captivating. Captivating was wonderful, liberating, filled with hope, and very down to earth. I wish I had come across this book first and long before I ever got ahold of other "Christian" books geared toward women.

If you're broken and hurting this is a good book for you to read. Yes there is hope. There is reason for that hope. Yes you can be fixed. This book calls women to action and to realization, not to passivity and guilt like so many others.

Best book ever!
By Mike
This book intrigued me, because I am a man who really enjoyed John Eldredge's other major book, "Wild At Heart." With all of that in mind, you should note that I am a man, and this book is very intriguing! I love the perspective of Staci Eldredge when I hear the stories: her passion and heart for what the book's main focus is evident. I also love the back-and-forth dialogue John and Staci have in parts of this book. It makes a great book to relax and hear.

Also, listening to this book has affirmed that I am headed in the right direction with a girl that I want to date. Rather than listening to other advice from pickup artists and other people who may extort women, I heard very loudly and clearly what God wanted me to hear. Isn't it great how God can use the small things in our lives to make the big things clear?

Oh, and this book frequently references scripture. If you are not comfortable with that, you might want to try it out and see if you can handle it. I don't think the references are too much, but I was raised in Church so I have heard all of it before. Just an advisory for others!
