Not very helpful

This book wastes a lot of time. It tells you how to do something using the HTML approach and then tells you that it is better to do it the ASP.NET way. Why bother with the first explanation? But then the explanation for ASP.NET way is not project-based so, when it's done, you don't know how to do it. Instead, it tells you to refer to downloadable code and just play with it. It should guide you step by step creating a web app in modular fashion instead of giving you a lot of details that don't make sense to you unless you are actually doing it. After all the title does include the word "Beginning" doesn't it? The sections on security are plain wrong - at least as far as my system is concerned. The registration form appears with more controls on it in design mode than when it is invoked in the app. Looking at the code is not edifying about why; so I remain clueless. And the book says nothing about it. This is just one example. The book is pretty much like this all the way through.

But then we VB developers are just second class citizens as far Microsoft is concerned. Very few of their online tutorials even mention VB except in passing. Instead they use C#. MS used to provide tutorials providing both C# and VB code. No more. I was hoping that a useful book for us VBers would do the job.

There is a "Pro" version of this title and I also have it. I will have to try it. Perhaps, it would be more useful.

But too much unneeded detail in the first half.
Plus the phrase "we will see/explain that later" was overused.
A beginning book should get to examples and key ideas more quickly.

A small book for guitar chords for my case. It would have been better if it had a spiral binding so it would lay flat but that can be done at any stationary store. All in all it is a good presentation of many chords to practice and use.

This book got me really into US Historical Geography. It provides an amazing insight into the geographical, political, and economic development of our country and illuminates the many ways that make this country so unique. Very incredible and work a read for the fan of US History or those interested in settlement patterns. Traveling is so much more fun after having been introduced to the info in this book.

American Landscape Roots and Transformations

IMPORTANT: Note that the preview that you access on this page is of the 1990 first edition, not the 2010 second edition! Many of the essays have been changed. They really should have two different entries, Amazon.

Conzen's The Making of the American Landscape (1990), was a major publication in interdisciplinary American landscape studies and has been extensively revised in this second edition. Many of the revisions have been made to expand coverage on the new trends of the past several decades, such as the New Urbanism and New Ruralism. The volume begins with essays on the natural environment and Native American occupation, through the major European colonizations (Spanish, French, British). American expansion explores transformation of forests, prairies, and deserts, and the contributions of various ethnicities to layers of human occupation on the land. Other essays cover industrialization and mechanization, civil society, authority, religion, and elite landscapes of power /wealth, the effect of automobiles (highways, commercial strips), and large-scale consumer landscapes (shopping, megastores, etc). Conflicts and contrasts in the American views of utopia, intentional communities, suburbs, and the increased theming (as in theme parks) and increasing transformation of our national landscapes. There are several new essays from different authors in the second edition. The essays give short shrift to Hawaii and Alaska, with a single mention of each, which is a real downside. I still decided to give it five stars with that caveat.

Funniest of the Quick Reads Short Stories

Men at Work is definitely the most entertaining of all the books in the Quick Reads Series. The story I think works so well because the main character Ian Greening, is such a likeable character, as his girlfriend who he clearly cares a lot about. So you do feel for the guy when his unemployed girlfriend gets a job in his workplace, and even though this means the end of independent Ian, he loves her so much he doesn't speak up. But his girlfriend ultimately goes to far in changing Ian's work life and image seen by his colleagues. Ian has to get rid of her, but how?

There's not a lot of humorous reads amongst the Quick Reads short stories series. Trouble on the Heath by Terry Jones is another good one to check out if you're after a fun read. If you're unfamiliar with the Quick Reads series, they are books published to increase literacy levels by encouraging those who don't like to read beyond magazines and comic books to try fiction through cheap priced (these all sell of the rack for under two pounds in the UK) short story length fiction and non fiction. I think Men at Work achieves those goals and those reading this as their first book ever or for a while will definitely be encouraged to try other Quick Reads stories or regular novels.

This is the first story I've come across by Mike Gayle, after reading this great book I'll definitely be checking out his novels.

About the Author

Sally Kempton is known both for her ability to lead students into deep states of meditation, and for her gift of making yogic wisdom applicable to daily life. She has spent over 40 years practicing, studying, and teaching meditation and spiritual philosophy. A former swami, or monk, she lived and studied for many years with enlightened Indian masters, and received training in the Kashmir Shaivism tradition. She writes "Wisdom," a regular column for Yoga Journal, and teaches workshops and retreats in the United States and Europe.

My new favorite book...

I have been impressed with Sally Kempton for a while now and was disappointed that I could not get a copy of her previous book on meditation. Apparently this is a newly updated and revised edition of that book and it is a gem. The book is enlightening, fascinating, informative and above all INSPIRING. For those of us who have attempted meditation without a teacher or guru but have withered quickly in the face of the daunting loneliness of the meditation cushion, Sally has arrived on the scene to guide us, support us, and provide the companionship so often necessary to weather the storm. After reading this book I was, for the first time, excited about meditation, rather than just viewing it as a drudgery I would at some time finally have to face if I was ever to find peace in this world. I have spent years reading about meditation and minutes actually doing it, but with Sally's guidance there is new hope. Now whenever the resistance arises, I just read a few paragraphs and I am back on track.

Sally is very versed and experienced in the "hows" of meditation and conveys that information in a clear and riveting way, but it is her offering of the "whys" that I find so valuable. No, there are no law of attraction ramblings here or promises of unlimited financial or material abundance, just an offering of the real possibility of finally being comfortable in our own skin and situation in life, which is what we are all after anyway, isn't it.

Chicken soup for the spiritually-inclined meditator's soul

If you're new to meditation, Sally Kempton's "Meditation for the Love of It" is probably not for you. On the other hand, if you've been meditating for years and have hit a plateau or are not getting as much out of meditation as you feel you should, you may find this book helpful, provocative, and enjoyable.

Kempton observes that the rewards of practicing meditation can decline as it loses novelty and becomes an everyday routine. She recalls a day many years ago when she suddenly recognized that her meditation practice had become rigid, mechanical, and unrewarding. To break out of her rut, she gave herself permission to experiment and play with her meditation practice, incorporating a variety of approaches and deliberately setting aside the advice of teachers who say there is only one correct way to meditate. She also refocused herself on the "ultimate goal" of meditation: "to experience the full emergence of your own pure Consciousness, the inner state of luminosity, love, and wisdom that the Indian tradition calls the 'inner Self' or the 'true Self' or the 'Heart.'" (p. 26) Most of the remainder of the book illustrates how to incorporate these two insights--allowing play, and focusing on the goal--into meditation practice.

A few caveats are in order: As I said at the outset, this isn't a book for beginners. Much of the discussion refers to experiences they will not have had, and the book isn't organized with their needs and concerns in mind. It's also not a step-by-step manual, even though Kempton does include more than 25 exercises and many more tips and guidelines. In addition, Kempton approaches meditation as a spiritual and mystical practice on the order of and sometimes directly involving prayer. Although she makes nods to Christianity, Judaism, and Islam (Sufism), her main influences are Hindu and Buddhist. Rationalists who see meditation as a path to relaxation, simple mindfulness, and non-mystical self-knowledge may be put off by this spiritual/religious orientation.

Here's where I give my big disclaimer: I'm a relative beginner and a rationalist, so I'm not a member of the book's core audience. Keep that in mind when I say that my overall impression of the book is positive, and that, with its combination of personal reminiscence, practical exercises and tips, and religious/philosophical discussion, the book will be very well received by many experienced meditators, especially those who are spiritually inclined.

In turn the authorities "legally" withdrew their rights and also stripped them of their possessions under Aryanization policies. Bodies such as the police and railway companies cooperated with the Nazis in transporting Jews to their deaths. The betrayal did not end in 1945. There is evidence of Holocaust survivors being attacked as they returned home. Historian Agnes Grunwald-Spier reveals, among other accounts, the story of Prosper de Zitter, a Nazi conspirator who betrayed hundreds of Jews to the Gestapo.

best never forgotten

A masterpiece of research and revealing communal psychology. It is history about those at the grass roots who made the reality of history for the masses, an masterful account about who collaborated in the ghastly events, best never forgotten, of Nazi Germany, and why they did so. Names, dates, detailed and absorbing thumbnail accounts are all in this book pointing up, often, the banality that lay behind decisions to betray or persecute innocent neighbours and which too often came down to almost unbelievably venal motives - the train guards for the 'cattle trucks' to Auschwitz who simply wanted an extra day off and slightly better pay, the child who saw so little wrong with the requisitioning of her Jewish friends' homestead that, after imparting the news to her Jewish playmate, wanted them to continue playing their childish games, and so forth. This is a painstaking story that makes clear what happened on the ground, dispelling any residual belief that the population at large were mere onlookers.

Incredible Book on the Subjunctive

I've always thought that the Spanish subjunctive was so complicated that it could be covered in a book by itself. I've always hoped for such a book, too. Following is its table of contents:

1. When to use the subjunctive and how to form its four tenses
2. Sequence of tenses and the subjunctive
3. Subordinated noun clauses
4. Subordinated adjective clauses
5. Adverbial expressions
6. Contrary-to-fact statements
7. Comprehensive exercises

The author states early in the book that many Spanish students assume that the subjunctive is all about doubt. The author is quick to explain that this assumption is problematic. The use of the subjunctive in doubt or uncertainty is only ONE of its many uses. I'm glad there's a book on the subjunctive that addresses this issue. I used to tutor a student in Spanish who thought the subjunctive was all about doubt. And trying to get her to understand that there was more to the subjunctive than just doubt was a difficult task.

The book explains how to conjugate all four tenses in the subjunctive, then it moves on to its uses. This book explains the uses of the subjunctive in the same order as many other books. First, it explains its uses in nominal clauses, then it moves on to adjective clauses, adverbial clauses, and contrary-to-fact statements. The end of the book has exercises.

I think this book is incredible, but I personally don't think it's a good idea to explain all four tenses at once. I think it's better to start out with the present subjunctive, learn how to use it, and then move on to the other tenses. The author mentions the future subjunctive and the future perfect subjunctive, but he doesn't explain how to use them. I wish he had; it's difficult to find reference materials that explain the future subjunctive.

I highly recommend this book. 5 stars!!!

Excellent self-study guide for the subjunctive!! Five stars for sure!

What I like about this book is that it is not so crammed pack with info that you find yourself discouraged trying to get through it. Rather, it succinctly explains the subjunctive in clear terms where you understand when to use it and how to use. I had already known that the subjunctive should be used when expressing doubt or uncertainty, but this book does a great job of clarifying all of the conditions beyond just "doubt and uncertainty" so I could build upon what I already knew about the subjunctive and gain a greater mastery over the topic. I also gained great insight from reading the chapter on which tenses to use of the subjunctive: present, imperfect, present perfect, and pluperfect. I already knew how to conjugate the four subjunctive tenses, but with this book, I really understood when to map the subjunctive tenses with the main clauses better than before. At the end of each chapter, there are exercises to reinforce your understanding of the chapter's lessons, but that isn't anything unique. What I did appreciate immensely, though, was that that the answer key at the back of the book went beyond simply listing the answer and actually explained why the answer listed is the correct answer. I found this to be invaluable when it comes to self-study. Sometimes it's not enough to simply see the answer, but to understand why that answer is "more correct" than what I had thought would have been the answer. Just to give some context to my review: I bought this book back in 2011 and still reference it from time to time. The fact that I do that finally got me to thinking that I should give this book the glowing review that it deserves after all of these years.

This is a very impressive little book. There are two main reasons it works nicely for me:

* This author knows his stuff and has a knack for explaining the material logically, to the point, and without unnecessary extra baggage. The concepts are conveyed VERY well--probably better than any language instruction author I've read.

* A rather uncommon approach is taken (which should be mimicked by other authors!): he does not separate the four common tenses of the subjunctive mood. The need for the subjunctive is explained as a whole, and then the four tenses' usage is put into an almost mathematical "if ... then ..." clause format. It's all presented as a unified concept and the reader is given lots of practice with intermingled usage requirements: subjunctive/indicative, past/present, four subjunctive tenses.

This approach is very effective pedagogically, at least for me, and has really helped me to clear up and REMEMBER the subjunctive mood in general. Other books give you the four tenses of the subjunctive mood one at a time. There is no cohesion or review. Once you go through say the imperfect subjunctive, you never see it again and it's gone from your mind in a week. In this book, it's all presented and drilled together. This is great practice in sorting out the various subjunctive tenses/usage and also in knowing when the subjunctive should NOT be used.

So, yeah, buy it!
