In light of current interest in the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas, rediscovery of the work of John Capreolus (1380-1444) is particularly important. Known to the Renaissance theologians who succeeded him as "prince of Thomists," he established a mode of Thomistic theological and philosophical engagement that has set the pattern for Thomistic thinkers after him. Twentieth-century scholarship on Capreolus tended to focus on questions concerning metaphysics, the person, and the beatific vision. The purpose of the present translation of his questions on the virtues is to bring to the fore another aspect of his thought, his theological ethics.

Capreolus's great work, his Arguments in Defense of the Theology of St. Thomas, constitutes a significant juncture in the history of Western theology. In one respect it is an exercise in the traditional genre of question-commentaries on Peter Lombard's Book of Sentences, a twelfth-century work that had been the official textbook of theology at the University of Paris. In Capreolus's hands, however, the format of the traditional Sentences commentary itself becomes a pretext for accomplishing a purpose more original than that of any preceding commentator on Lombard's work, namely to defend the thought of Aquinas against his late thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century adversaries, including John Duns Scotus, Durandus of St. Pour�ain, and Peter Aureole.

The selection from Capreolus's work represented in this translation shows him defending Aquinas's conclusions on faith, hope, charity, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and the virtues against such adversaries. With a spirit of generosity in quotation, Capreolus lets each adversary have his say, but the outcome of the disputes is never in question, as Capreolus on each point leads the reader towards a view of the superiority of the Thomistic position.

Smart Book

Phonetics for Dummies is the text I have been waiting for. I teach Phonetics at the undergraduate level and know the available texts on the market pretty well. They are all fine. They are all over $100. They all go unbought by my students. Author William Katz is a phonetician, researcher, and teacher. This is the right combination. His book is inviting, engaging, and useful to students. AND it is affordable.

The only concern I have is "overcoming" the "...for Dummies" trademark with students who would look down on an entry in the series as not being serious scholarship. More's the pity, for this book is smart. It lays out the foundations of articulatory phonetics, and it covers nicely that sweet spot of articulation's connection to acoustic properties and listener perceptions. It shows why Phonetics is useful/important/fun, and it offers hands-on practice for students to apply what they just read.

Absolutely, this is the required text for all my future Phonetics courses. I will also suggest it to those language-geek friends of mine. Best of it, it isn't too English-centric (as some books can be), yet it never loses the typical American English reader.

Very Clear and Complete Text, but One Minor Kindle Frustration -- Still Worth the Purchase.

I think this purchase gave quite good value for the money and would recommend the book to anyone interested in phonetics, whether as someone working in relevant fields (actors, speech language pathologists, etc.) or just as someone who is curious about the basics of speech production, language change, language learning, and the way various people deal with expressing themselves in the wide variety of languages in the world.
The author writes well and has organized his material well. He also writes with good but appropriate humor which, happily, facilitates his explanations of occasionally complicated matters. It's clear that he is writing for a diverse audience and some of the later chapters were clearly primed for those specialists working with people with various types of injury-based speech impediments, but even these chapters were quite interesting, and remarkably clear (for this reader, who has no background or direct knowledge of the field).
If I am seemingly so high on the book (and I am) then why not five stars versus four. The answer is simply that I bought the kindle addition and, while the text and larger diagrams were clear and had no discernible problems, a number of the charts laying out portions of, for example, the International Phonetic Alphabet, were extremely difficult to make out, given the shrinking of the page necessary to fit on a Kindle screen. This factor was a bit frustrating (although readily understandable), but still didn't prevent the purchase being extremely worthwhile.

I am very impressed with the content and presentation of the material in this title. Very well written, and I recommend it for all students of linguistics - linguists and language learners alike.

Being punished for a crime is different from being regulated in the public interest, or being forced to compensate another who has been injured by one's conduct, or being treated for a disease. The sanction is at once l uniquely coercive and, in the broadest sense, uniquely expensive. As a consequence, these state activities are in special need of moral warrant. Given the great potential for doing grave injustice, the power of the state embodied in the criminal justice system ought not be exercised in the absence of a complete and compelling moral justification.

A marvelous classic collection of stories

This is one of the great classics both of Chinese literature and of stories in general. Particularly notable are the many interactions between people and ghosts and people and foxes.
This is the early and still excellent Giles translation, but the newer one from Penguin is fleet and wonderful too.
