About the Author
Lisa Kemmerer is a philosopher-activist (M.Th., Harvard; Ph.D., philosophy, Glasgow, Scotland) and the author/editor of half a dozen books on animal advocacy, ethics, and religion. She is also an artist and a lover of wild places who has hiked, biked, kayaked, backpacked, and traveled widely.

Just an awesome book!!!!

This book is a huge gigantic step in getting people to be more awake and mindful within their religious practice with regards to total compassion for all living sentient beings and the environment. Whatever that particular faith amongst the world's major traditions may be, Christian, Buddhist, Islam etc, all call upon the practicioner (follower) to be compassionate and act in such a way that adds more love and reduces suffering in the world.
A must read for anyone who professes to have a spiritual or religious component to their lives or even for the non-religious person who wonders what the rest of the world's religions have written about how humans ought interact with the other animals who call this planet their home.
I have never had a book I underlined more and will most certainly use this handy work as I seek to get people to think about their own faith and the food they eat. This book is about getting people to make the necessary and very logical and practical connections which exist in all world religions regarding a virtuous spiritual path.

The amazing thing here is how all major world religions actually on a fundamental level uphold a life-style that does not exploit and visit suffering upon animals for food, milk etc... which causes massive suffering on the scale of many many billions each and every year. In fact the average American directly or indirectly through diety habits is responsible for the deaths of something like 200 animals each and every year. Just think if we stopped all this suffering and chose a better healthier diet that did not rely on animal exploitation in any form. It would be a total win-win. Human health and well-being would be greatly improved physically and spiritualy. The environment would be improved; factory farming in the US consumes more grain than humans and produces far more waste (not treated) than humans.

I loved this quote I found in this book as well by Gandhi: "A government that is evil has no room for good men and women except in its prisons" This quote made me think of China's CCP regime and its jailed nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo amongst many others etc...

Remarkably accessible scholarship

If you're looking for a book about views on animals in a specific religion (e.g. Christianity or Buddhism) there are several books to choose from, but if you want to read about animals in ALL the major religions, Kemmerer's work is THE book to read. Massive research has gone into Animals and World Religions--being an author on the topic of animal ethics, I can appreciate the amount of work that this volume required. Despite being a monumental research effort, Kemmerer's writing is non-technical--an easy and enjoyable read, riddled with interesting stories and anecdotes. Animals and World Religions is an impressive piece of remarkably accessible scholarship.

Religious Perspectives on Animal Welfare: A Great Exposition

This book is excellent from a number of perspectives: Firstly, the author has gone to great lengths to actually use the various scriptures of the World Religions and the writings and sayings of their proponents and connects the principles of each of the belief systems/religions with respect to non-human animals or as the author creatively puts it: 'anymals'. The topic of the book and approach have a number of benefits: It is shown by Kemmerer that at the core, each of these religions is expressing the same view in terms of the sacredness of creation and how we as humans ought to recognize and relate to it. The book makes one curious to learn more about each of these religions and engage in further comparative analysis. It also clears up misconceptions 'believers' have about each others religions that can lead to co-operation rather than conflict and working towards a common cause (such as animal protection). The chapter on Islam is very extensive and thorough, for example, and highlights the vast concern for 'anymals' in Islam, not even known to many Muslims themselves!
Many of the followers of these religions have no doubt strayed from their respective founders' belief structures. There are aspects of current 'malpractices' in the name of religion that do indeed sadly exist. However, I think that the author has wisely left these out of discussion and focused on the positive aspects; those which were practised by the 'founders'. The book as a whole is therefore well researched, written and very motivational. It should be required reading for courses on this subject, at high school and university level, where this crucial topic of animals/ecology certainly needs to be discussed in greater depth and scope.
