About the Author
Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was born in Yorkshire. His first book, The Hawk in the Rain, was published in 1957 by Faber and Faber and was followed by many volumes of poetry and prose for adults and children, including The Iron Man (1968). He received the Whitbread Book of the Year for both Tales from Ovid (1997) and Birthday Letters (1998). He was Poet Laureate from 1984, and in 1998 he was appointed to the Order of Merit.

A favorite book, but not as advertised

Ted Hughes' "Crow" may well be my favorite 20th century book of poetry, and I purchased this copy to present as a Christmas present. Leonard Baskin's illustrations are stunning, and I was happy to find a copy through Amazon via a third party. However, despite the book being advertised on-line with Baskin's cover, the copy I was sent had a purely black cover, and Baskin's illustrations were not included in the edition I was sent (hence my 3-star ranking, instead of the 5 stars the book deserves). Because it was a Christmas gift, I did not have the time to return the item and request the edition I believed I had ordered.

All that being said, and with all due respect to his "Birthday Letters," Britain's former poet-laureate created his masterpiece with "Crow," introducing a volatile new character into the Garden of Eden who upsets and upends the order of things as we know it. Ted Hughes was a shaman of a poet, connected to darker energies and a mojo that by turns is sinister and hilarious. Not for the faint of heart, and certainly not for fundamentalists--Rick Santorum, beware! Infinitely more entertaining than King James, sexual, violent and irreverent, "Crow" is both a satire of one of the seed-myths of Middle Eastern culture (i.e., Genesis) and a gutsy interpolation into that myth of a "trickster" energy more akin to Coyote of the American Southwest than to anything biblical.

Hilarious Words That Don't Appear in the Dictionary But Should

I first remember hearing about Sniglets from Rich Hall on TV. I think he was doing guest spots on David Letterman's daytime show back in the early 1980s. "Sniglets" are basically words that don't appear in the dictionary but should. Rich Hall has compiled an entire book of these, and they've provided me with a lot of humor over the years.

Believe it or not, at the classical Christian school at which I teach, I have one of the students write the Sniglet for the day on the board. I've also had students try to come up with their own Sniglets, and then I let them write them on the board (if they're any good).

A few good examples of Sniglets are the following: Bleemus (blee' mus) - n. The disgusting film on the top of soups and cocoa that sit out for too long.

Blithwapping - v. Using anything BUT a hammer to hammer a nail into the wall, such as shoes, lamp bases, doorstops, etc.

Doork (dawrk) - n. A person who always pushes on a door marked "pull" or vice versa.

Hozone (ho' zohn) - n. The place where one sock in every laundry load disappears to.

My favorite use of a Sniglet word came just a week or two ago. The class had seen the word "spratchet" on the board, which is the made up name for the piece of plastic that's used to divide one shopper's items from another in a grocery store. I kept telling my high school class that we ought to all begin using the word "spratchet" and see if it catches on. I'm not sure if any of them ever took my suggestion. But a week or two ago I was in WalMart with my son when I dared him to ask the woman in front of us to please pass the spratchet. He wrestled with the idea for more than a minute and finally mustered up the nerve (after some prodding from me).

He calmly pointed to the spratchet and said to the woman, "Would you please pass the spratchet?" Without missing a beat, she calmly passed the spratchet. Maybe she was just being friendly and maybe she was just too embarrassed to admit that she didn't know those things were called spratchets.

This is only one example of the practical fun you can have with Sniglets, in addition to simply reading them and passing them around with your friends. Sniglets is highly recommended for group reading. Try it!

Our Remarkable Soldiers

This book was a tremendous story, and I highly recommend it. The horror this young man, and his buddies went through is hard to fathom. What our military put these young men through is hard for any common person to comprehend. It was amazing that he lived. He lost three of his best friends, and barely lived to tell the story. This book is a must read because for one thing, the movie that was made about his ordeal is not completely accurate. The story didn't need to be embellished, but the movie makers thought their vision of what happened was better than that of Marcus Luttrell, and they were very wrong. By reading the book, I knew what actually happened, and it was more intriguing than what the movie portrayed. Some people will never read the book so I guess the movie will give them some idea what it was like, but the book tells the real truth. Marcus' story telling ability kept me riveted to my seat, and brought tears to my eyes to hear what terrible things these young men had to endure. I hope that lots of people will read this book written by a remarkable young soldier.

Compelling story that will fill you with pride for our military heroes.

I bought this book for my husband, who is currently serving in the U.S. Army. He greatly enjoyed it, and so did I. It's an easy read, but it will hold your attention until the end. It starts out by walking you through SEAL training, which allows you to understand just how difficult it is for the men to make it through in the first place.
Then the book shifts gears and discusses the first-hand account of a battle in Afghanistan that will quickly make you realize why SEAL training is so grueling and give you a new appreciation for our men and women in uniform. The story is told in a way that keeps you captivated, but also teaches you a lot. It's very well written. If you enjoy true stories of military heroism or you're just looking for an interesting historical read, this book is a great choice. It will certainly be read by generations. I would recommend this book for adults or older teenagers (15 or above). It's a great read, and I know I will revisit this book again in the future.

This book is so tremendous that once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. For anyone who loves reading stories about patriotism and military, this book is a good choice and well worth your time. It is about a journey of Marcus Luttrell—the author, also is the only survivor of Operation Redwing mission. The author describes remarkable and miserable details of what his team encountered on the mountain and how sorrowful he was to lose his partners. Yet he still set an example of having courage and persistence to finish missions. What a Tragic ending! Marcus Luttrell as well as his fallen comrades worth being respected and the spirit of patriotism and persistence can still be seen in the young generation.

Exploring themes such as suicide, infidelity, and a non-consummated marriage, the novel follows Will’s sexual awakening. It’s a cocktail of humour, sadness, tragedy and, above all else – love.

TOUCHING ROMANCE

This is essentially a romance, but there is so much more to it than that. It deals with some deeper issues that effect not only the hero Will, but the heroine Alison. It is a times lighthearted and at other times very sad. But the author has managed to take all of this and weave a sentimental and heartfelt tale.

The two main characters are well described and very likeable. I thought I might find it difficult to believe that a 6' 2"
Hunk was a virgin. But due to how his life circumstances have played out so far, I was eventually convinced. Plus he suffers from a crippling form of shyness. I also liked Alison, even though I thought she was a bit naive.

As the story progresses what at first seemed a straight forward love story between two like minded people, suddenly had a whole lot of drama injected into it.

There are a few editing issues but nothing too major to disrupt my enjoyment.

Far better than it's predecessor

At first, I wasn't sure about reading this book--I've had good and bad experiences with stories based on other material so far, but this one is really superior in many ways to the miniseries that inspired it. The Will Barnes character is clearly based in part on the John Standring character played by Richard Armitage (although a minor role, he is clearly the best thing in the series and the main reason to watch it). My only real quibble with the book is the development of the main female character--seems like we don't ever know enough about her to understand why she behaves as she does, except for the single instance that sets in motion the entire series of events. That said, it is still a very lovely love story, and you fall in love with Will almost instantly, cheering him on every step of the way. Normally, in a book of this kind, you're crossing your fingers for the female lead to find happily ever after--in this case, you're definitely rooting for the unusual hero to finally find his long overdue joy in life. A real gem.

The perfect love story to curl up with

I just finished "Weathering the Storm" and absolutely could not put it down. My Kindle ran out of battery so I plugged it in and continued. It's a cold snowy day here and this was the perfect book to warm it. If you are a Richard Armitage fan you will recognize in Will some similarities with his character John Standring. For everyone, this is a beautifully written love story that is simply and elegantly told. I'm not sure why it would be difficult to imagine a handsome man with little experience with women. Shyness and lack of opportunity can isolate anyone. Will is the perfect romantic hero...and he can cook. What more could any woman want? I could not recommend this book more highly. I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Good or bad characterisation can make or break a book and it’s not just a question of creating solid individuals for the main focus of the story, we have to think about a whole cast of supporting characters, too. Judy Hall has come up with an excellent idea for creating the right blend of faults and foibles in your characters - and it’s a useful device even if you’re not sympathetic to zodiacal interpretations! There’s also a secondary difficulty with characterisation and that is the need to create a completely different cast of characters for a second and third book – and making them convincing. As Judy Hall points out in her Introduction: “The zodiac archetypes are so characteristic and instantly identifiable the resonate with the reader at an almost subconscious level.” Highly recommended.

Judy Hall’s ASTRO-CHARACTERS fills a crucial niche in an otherwise stacked-to-the-gills library of writers’ guides. She writes in an approachable, no-nonsense style which both echoes and enriches her subject matter. I’ve been constructing astro-charts for my main characters for years now, and find it an immensely useful tool for keeping tabs on elusive protagonists. I particularly liked the author’s Crib Sheets section – her Leo notes are very close to the bone indeed! A thoroughly well-written and well-researched book by an experienced author which should grace any aspiring writer’s bookshelf.

A bible to the Mod movment!

This book is stuffed with detailed information on the Mod culture of the early 60's. The author goes on and on telling whatever he can on what was going on, how they dressed, what they liked, the drugs, the scooters...everything! That's not all of it. That book contians thousands of black and white photographs of the scene (images of the kids danceing, riding and strutin' themselves across the beaches). This book tells the history of mod from it's humble begings to it's sad end in the mid-sixties. I would recomend this book to anyone who is interested in Mod. I would also suggest viewing the movie "Quadrophenia" for more of an idea of what Mod was.

An aphorism for clean living under difficult circumstances

Well, I used to get mad trying to look cute like them, me and my mates spent hours reading it! I translated it into Italian and photocopied my translation handing it out at the mod meetings held in Rimini each easter. Now I'm past those days but sweet memories still keep coming back.
A reportage from the past with fresh and amazing photos, but you'll find that style is not a fashion!
Five stars is my rating, but is not an impartial one!

About the Author
Petko Bahovski received a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics and a Master’s degree in International Economics and Finance from Brandeis University, Boston. From 1994 to 1999, Petko began to build his banking career by working at American Express, ING Bank, Baring Asset Management and Chase Manhattan Bank. From 1999 to 2008 he worked with JPMorgan, the largest bank in the US, as an investment banker based in New York, London, Hong Kong and Singapore. Petko was responsible for the delivery of emerging markets products to Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, and Asia, travelling extensively in these regions to meet clients from private banks, pension funds, insurance companies and asset managers. In 2008 he moved to Switzerland, where he is still based, in order to become a private banking expert. From 2008 to 2012, Petko managed teams of private bankers at Credit Suisse, the second largest Swiss private bank, and at Coutts, one of the world’s oldest banks and wealth managers. His focus was on Russia, Ukraine and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), serving private banking clients in those countries. At present Petko advises banks on how to build their private banking strategy, and also provides consultation services for individual clients on private banking-related matters.

Decoding Private Banking services

This is a well thought out and concise book on how to choose a Private Bank. It is structured in a very user friendly way, where each chapter provides a good overview of the issues to consider and then after each chapter there is a check list highlighting the things you should be seeking answers to as you go through the selection process.

This book goes through a vast number of issues that should be contemplated when selecting, spanning all the way from asset allocation, personal situation, retirement goals and all the way to fee structures. It is all explained to provide the reader with a good overview and without assuming the reader has any previous finance experience.

"How to Choose a Private Bank" should be read by anyone who uses a Private Bank and not only by people who is looking to select a new Private Bank. After reading this book you will have a better understanding of what services you should expect from a Private Banker and how much you should be paying for these services.

The author clearly have significant experience, but the book is unbiased towards any specific banks and when reading this book you get a sense that the author has written the book after having underwent a Private Bank selection process himself instead of a Private Banker who is trying to sell you on how fantastic Private Banking services are.

Great collection of advice

The book offers a very detailed overview of private banks, and is geared primarily to PB/PWM customers (naturally), but can certainly be useful for anyone in the industry. The book is very organized, and is broken down into 24 chapters, like a textbook. Each chapter covers its own topic, and together the text becomes a very enlightening set of tips and examples. The author clearly explains how the system works inside the banks, shows that there are differences and what they are in every aspect of selecting a bank and the banker. He illustrates that there is no single bank that will be suitable for all clients, and one should not base the decision solely on the brand name of the bank. Also, the importance of diversification among several banks and countries, and very clear logic behind the diversification. The text is written in a very informal easy-to-read language with no sophisticated terminology. The whole narrative is in a bullet-point format, the impression is that of a power point presentation (in a good way!) where only the most relevant information is presented. Every paragraph is a useful tip with the logic behind it, and an example right after. I loved the relevant examples after each point to make it clear. No unnecessary space-filler sentences. There is a checklist of tips after each chapter, with all checklists compiled at the end of the book. I didn’t notice any bias toward any particular country or bank. Quite the opposite, the author constantly mentions the differences between global markets, and urges to consider your residence country when selecting the bank. The author provides real-life scenarios that are very easy to visualize and relate to, something that will make you think about your future. Very objective and informative view. The author clearly knows the industry from inside-out, and can probably explain all the specifics to a 5-year old. When reading, the impression is not of being sold a product, but being educated by a consultant, which certainly makes the read more comfortable. The ratio of the amount of knowledge gained to word count is very high, so the value of the book is great. Overall, highly recommend to anyone that is related to or planning to be part of private banking / PWM industry - as a client or otherwise.

Very practical private banking guide

This well structured book gives a solid base of what one should be aware of when choosing a private bank. Besides the typical private banking services, the author talks about things like succession planning, securities lending which were new to me and I would find useful in the future. The checklist at the end of each chapter equips the reader with practical questions that could be used when dealing with a private bank.
By reading this book, I got a much better understanding of how banks charge fees. The topic is discussed not only in the fees chapter but also through worked examples in the investment funds, as well as in the chapters portfolio management, discretionary portfolio management, succession planning and active trading.
You should be aware that the book does not give particular investment advice nor does it provide a list of private banks to choose from.
Coming from an Emerging Markets country, I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering to open a private banking account, especially if the bank is outside of their country of residence.

Be aware this is a very THIN book compared to others in this series. It gives you an intro to Appium with some very good code examples. If you are looking at Apppium in depth this isn't for you. If you are looking at getting started with Appium - this is a good intro for beginners.
It does require you to have some coding experience, but it's pretty easy reading.

Would I recommend this to others learning Appium - yes. Would I pass this on to one of our developers - Probably Not as it would only be used as a coaster.
