The Hockey Stick Illusion: Climategate and the Corruption of Science (Independent Minds), by A.W. Montford

Here is the definitive expos of the distorted science behind the iconic global warming graph centrally responsible for the global panic about climate change.

From Steve McIntyre's earliest attempts to reproduce the Michael Mann's Hockey Stick graph, to the explosive publication of his work and the launch of a congressional inquiry, The Hockey Stick Illusion is a remarkable tale of scientific misconduct and amateur sleuthing. It explains the complex science of this most controversial of temperature reconstructions in layperson's language and lays bare the remarkable extent to which climatologists have been willing to break their own rules in order to defend climate science's most famous finding.

The book also covers the recent leak of the email archives of the Climatic Research Unit which has led to the resignation of its Director, Professor Phil Jones, and exposed the degree to which climate scientists on both sides of the Atlantic have hidden and manipulated data to support their claims.

Andrew Montford's The Hockey Stick Illusion is one of the best science books in years...This book deserves to win prizes.

Andrew Montford tells this detective story in exhilarating style.

Montford, who conducts a blog mostly about climate, called Bishop Hill and used his accounting skills of patience and precision in dealing with heaps of data to tell a connected and, often, thrilling story. --HARRY EAGAR, Staff Writer The Maui News July 11 2010

You may have heard that the 20th century was the warmest in 1,000 years, or that the 1990s were the warmest decade in at least 600 years. Perhaps you also know that these claims originated in peer-reviewed science, which produced a temperature graph showing a hockey stick shape.
These claims are, in fact, bogus. It was obvious from the start that they were at least dubious, because when professor Michael Mann stated that his studies showed that "there was no Medieval Warm Period," the fact of a MWP had already been established, beyond dispute, by direct observations made by the French social historian Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie.
Why, then, did Mann's hockey stick persuade so many people? A.W. Montford, an English accountant, does not answer that question - except indirectly, by showing that the people persuaded did not look at it carefully - but he does explain, in detail, why the hockey stick was junk science.

Improbably, the story reads like a murder mystery, a combination of locked room puzzler (how did Mann and his associates get a hockey stick where it could not have existed?) and courtroom drama (as Sherlock Montford presents the forensic deconstruction of the trick).
Montford, who conducts a blog mostly about climate, called Bishop Hill and used his accounting skills of patience and precision in dealing with heaps of data to tell a connected and, often, thrilling story.
Although the Hockey Team did, and is still doing, its best to keep its data secret, the persuasive advantage that Montford has is that all his claims are based on documents, many of which are reproduced in his book.
"The Hockey Stick Illusion" deserves space on the shelf of classic books about science fraud like Peter Medawar's "The Strange Case of the Spotted Mice." Montford, though not a scientist, is a good choice to tell this story, for, as Medawar said, "There is poetry in science but also a lot of bookkeeping." --HARRY EAGAR, Staff Writer The Maui News July 11 2010

Mann Come Clean!
By Don Estreich
This is an amazing book. The deception of the global warming community is startling. When I earned my Ph.D. at Stanford University we were taught that openness and honesty, subject to peer review, was essential to honest and successful research. That is important for real scientific progress. Yes, scientists must have high ethics rather think only about the next funding round. The foot dragging of Mann et al. is well documented with their own words in this book -- that is quite eye opening with regard to this group. If you have taken the hockey stick model for global warming as your religion, I dare you to read this book. (But I doubt you will.)

Little boys who tell lies will grow up to be weathermen!
By justanopinion
I love to read. I love math. It may sound sick, butI love to read about the math. This is a very well written explanation of how to take the scientific method and destroy the the credibility of scientists. Seems the developers of the hockey stick hoist a premise and then go about the process of proving it to themselves and using their allies to back them up. Noting that they seem to deny the process while hailing the process. If anyone every wanted to have it both ways, the Hockey Stick climatologist are those ones. I loved the book, but am disappointed in the field of Paleo Climatologist "Scientists" who claim a scientific basis for the hockey stick. In a former life I flew airplanes and have a joke referencing the credibility of Weathermen. The joke actually fits these illusionists who developed the hockey stick. "Little boys who tell lies, will grow up to be weathermen (paleo-climatologist). If you like to read of the web of deceit weaved in our lifetime - this is a book that un-weaves that web of deceit.

Deeply-thought out and potential game-changer in the fight against obesity
By T.J. Murphy
It seems to me that in writing Wired to Eat, Robb Wolf spent a great deal of time thinking hard about how to present his ideas in a way that will get traction with readers. It’s not so much a diet book but a book that takes a few steps back from the psychological and emotional gridlock involved in the subject and uses a language that is thoughtful, calm and with occasional bits of awfully brilliant humor, all the while presenting a smart case for how to think about food based on science and common sense. Remarkably, it’s both fun to read and vitally incisive. Wolf takes us along a line of thinking on why we as a society need to earnestly let go of the morality trap that so many people who struggle being overweight get stuck in—that being overweight is a failure of human willpower and character. Wolf painstakingly shows, through the lens of evolutionary biology, how the modern food industry (with the disturbing blessings of government subsidies) takes advantage of it (e.g. by employing food scientists that are masters of dialing up the hyperpalatability of junk food). As Wolf remarks in regards to the old potato chip marketing promise about how you can’t eat just one, “I’ll take that bet every time.” Last week I read an article on Politico on the obesity and in one of the photos was a six-year-old girl, overweight, who was being taught how to use a treadmill. I hope this book gets in the hands of those who were coaching her.

In regards to the how-to in the book, Wolf again has thought and worked hard to present ideas readily grasped, make sense and are relatively easy to carry out. In particular, I like his food matrix approach to learning how to cook, where you use a chart with 20 ingredients and from there can whip up more than 600 meals that you can do well by rather than be overwrought by meal plans that always to have recipes where there are ingredients you don’t have or have never heard of. As far as fresh ground, Wolf has included a concrete pathway (using blood glucose tests) toward identifying foods that are going to cause you problems and those that you can get away with.

This book is not a lecture-from-the-mountain-top sort of book on what the best diet is. It’s a smart reframing of the problems surrounding food in 2017 with some well-thought ideas on how to navigate through them and how sleep, exercise and stress figure in. It seems likely that anyone following the path laid out by Wolf is going to have success in feeling better, burning off excess fat and reeling in a good set of biomarkers. He does a good job of making this path feel accessible and fun to hop on.

Fantastic book with a fresh point of view
By Eva Taylor
Let me first say that the person who gave this book a 1-star review has to be smoking crack. I think it is highly likely that they do not like the ideas, theories and plan presented in this book simply because it requires them to admit they need to make changes they aren't yet willing to make. To say that this information has been "out there" in the mainstream is simply hilarious! I could go on, but I'd rather write about why this book is so great.

I'm not new to Paleo, but I've struggled to implement it on a full-time basis for years now. Despite knowing and firmly believing this is the way to eat for longevity and optimal health, I still fall victim to eating everything in sight and continuing my not-so-fun ride on the blood sugar rollercoaster. I found this way of eating when my first-born was 15 months old so both of my children have always eaten this way, damn near 100% of the time. The amazing health effects I see with them are simply undeniable. The effects on my own health and well-being when I'm being "good" and not cheating too much are also remarkable.

This book boasts a host of information in a format that is truly hilarious. Robb's writing style has literally made me laugh out loud and it also keeps you from getting bogged down in some of the content that could certainly become bit too technical, if not for the humor injected in it. But I think my favorite part of the book is learning the "why" behind our need to overeat. Simple after you read and digest it (pun intended), but absolutely mind-blowing to me and how I will now approach adopting this lifestyle for good. Release the guilt and read this book so you can really, for once and for all, understand the mechanisms at work behind your "failures" and get with the program that brings you back to great health.

This of course isn't the first Paleo-type book out there, nor the first I've ever read. But I will say the information presented about why we are in fact wired to eat is incredibly unique. It's an approach I haven't seen used yet and my gut (jeez, with the puns) tells me it's going to hit the nail on the head for many, many people. And the 7-day Carb Test is probably the most unique feature of the book/plan, which I cannot wait to get to. Personalized nutrition for the cost of a book is something you just can't complain about. (Unless you're the 1-star guy.)

The Paleo Diet Is More Misunderstood Than A Goth Kid Living In Arkansas
By Bassocantor
In WIRED TO EAT, Robb Wolf first explains how he got involved with Paleo, or the “ancestral diet.” Many years ago, he was very ill with ulcerative colitis: “I was facing a bowel resection, statins, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants. . . I thought I was going to die, and the idea was pretty appealing, considering how much my life and health sucked. I was a mess.” Out of desperation, he tried this “wacky” idea. Convinced (and healthier), he then made the Paleo philosophy an integral part of his life.

The first part of WIRED TO EAT is where we adopt an “Ancestral Health model” of diet. He calls this the “30-Day Reset.” The second part is the “7-Day Carb Test,” where we figure out exactly how certain food options affect us. In the second phase, you eat an exact amount of carbs, and you test your blood sugar level. Between 90 and 115. Here’s the key: You try different foods and see which ones cause an overly large spike. If so, that food is not your best choice.

Throughout the book, Robb emphasizes that everyone is different; thus, “Our individual needs may be profoundly different than those of our neighbor.” The author is brutally honest about the difficulty in making substantive changes to your lifestyle. He admits it will be tough.

Robb explains the scientific basis for a Paleo-type diet. The book is “Wired to Eat” because our genes encourage us to find food to eat. We humans used to be a lot more active, having to walk a long ways to get our food. Now, we don’t have to move at all! “Hunter-gatherers walked 5 to 10 miles most days. Today, many of us walk less than a half mile every day as we shuffle from house to car.” Making things worse, we live in a society full of foods that have been “engineered for overeating.” Then, if we try a simple (normal) meal, it tastes terrible! That’s why the first phase is called a “Reset.” The reset interrupts the constant stimulation about eating fast, unhealthy food. This phase “rewires” our appetite.

I thought some of the best sections were not even diet related. For example, one of the best sections is “How to Get Awesome Sleep.” In the section called, “The Puritan Work Ethic,” the author suggests that Americans get 2 hours less sleep than in the 1970’s. This sacrifice is a terrible tradeoff. There are quite a few detailed tips for improving our sleep; here are some of my favorites:

1. Get more daytime sun on your person and in your eyes to establish a normal circadian rhythm.
2. Our evenings need to be darker, cooler, and not the equivalent of a rock concert if we want to get the best sleep possible.
3. Limit evening tech.
4. Sleep in a cool room.

As another example, Robb also explains that there is one thing that hurts us just as much as obesity or smoking. It’s called “social isolation” but it’s just plain loneliness. He gives suggestions on how to incorporate more social interaction into your life. For example, the author takes an exercise class with others. “Humans are social beings, and without adequate social connection our health and longevity can be as negatively impacted as if we had a pack-a-day smoking habit.”

All in all I found WIRED TO EAT to be a well-researched, clearly written book. Some parts were more valuable to me than others. I was already familiar with the “gut” aspects of healthy eating, so that section was not as interesting to me as it might be to others. On the other hand, I especially appreciated the author’s emphasis on social interaction and sleep.

Dolmarehn - Book Two of the Otherworld Trilogy (The Otherworld Series 2), by Jenna Elizabeth Johnson

“Do you trust me Meghan?”

His voice was soft, almost pleading. I swallowed and tried hard to discern his expression in the dark. The paltry amount of light reaching this far into the small cavern glinted off his eyes, giving him the appearance of a demon trying to tempt me into doing something evil.

“Yes,” I answered, my own voice a mere whisper, “I trust you.”

“Good.”

He gave my hand a quick squeeze, and then I was pulled forward into the icy abyss that loomed before us . . .

A year ago, Meghan Elam learned that she was Faelorehn, a being of the Otherworld. Immortal. Now she must juggle her life in the mortal world with the one she has started to build in the Otherworld. However, keeping her identity secret from her friends and family while trying to avoid a wrathful Celtic goddess is no easy task.

With the help of the intriguing Cade MacRoich, Meghan will learn that not only does she come from a place full of magic and wonder but that she, too, is far more powerful than she ever thought possible.

Great series!
By Tammy
I read book 1, Faelorelyn of the Other world Trilogy and really enjoyed it. This book was even better than the first one and I plan to read the 3rd book, Luathara next. I can't wait to read what happens next for Meghan and Cade. The only negative thing for me are reviews by older adults who complain about a teen's/character's behavior described in a book. I have a teenage daughter who has friends over all the time and they don't all act the same, but the one thing they do have in common is inexperience in life. They do things that to me as a parent and older person may think of as childish, silly or just plain stupid sometimes. It's to be expected. So I totally disagree with those reviews as I'm sure that's what the writer was trying to portray to begin with.....a confused teen or a teen doing something immature at times, etc. I guess for those that don't have a teenager or child they are guessing at what one acts like.

Jenna Johnson weaves such a magical world and if you like this kind of story line then you should buy this book!

potentially good story, but replete with grammatical errors and bogged down by flat characters
By Sara
*SPOILER FREE*
I tried to like this book. I really did. I was largely disappointed in the first installment of the series, although I was intrigued enough by the Celtic folklore to finish that one. I was encouraged by the positive reviews of the second book, as the consensus seemed to be that it is much more fast-paced and engaging than the first. And it is--to a degree. I would rate this book 2 1/2 stars if given the option, but I don't think it deserves 3. I should emphasize that I am reading from the perspective of an adult fan of YA fiction (preferably of the dystopian variety, but I can appreciate a good fantasy or sci-fi, as well).

I'll start with the positives: The premise for the story is more or less original. The author does a good job of explaining the Celtic references so that they are understandable to the uninitiated. As far as the characters go, there are a few who are introduced for the first time in Dolmarehn who are relatively well-developed, believable, and even endearing. There is more action in this book than in the first, and I see the greater amount of time spent in the Otherworld as compared to the last book as a good thing.

That brings me to the negatives. First of all, whereas a few of the new characters make for a more engrossing story, almost all of the returning supporting characters detract from the narrative. Meghan's highschool friends are frustratingly underdeveloped, flat, boring, and (particularly in the case of her two male friends) contribute little, if anything, to the plot. Similarly, Meghan's family is largely superfluous; why is it necessary for her to have so many brothers if the author is not going to take the trouble to develop distinct personalities and roles for most of them? Meghan's parents take surprisingly little interest in their teenage daughter's social life and whereabouts, although this is somewhat forgivable, considering the genre. Still, their benign neglect of her, although necessary at times to advance the plot, stretches the limits of plausibility, in my opinion. As for the two main characters, they are better developed, but not particularly likable. Meghan's obsession with her own insecurities is trying at times. She spends the majority of the book doing homework (seriously--there is so much attention devoted to her homework that I felt like I was back in school just reading about it!) and whining to herself about Cade and his intentions. For his part, Cade is so elusive that it is hard to develop any kind of connection with him. He has a habit of showing up unannounced, delivering a cryptic message to Meghan, and disappearing without ever explaining himself. Frustratingly, Meghan never seems to ask the right questions of him.

My other major issue with this book (true of the first one, as well) is that it is full of grammatical errors ("you're" instead of "your," "too" instead of "to," that kind of thing) and, at times, the writing is rather sloppy. Something that stood out to me in both books is the author's extreme overuse of the word "grin." I would say, on average, these characters "grin" at least three times per page. And not only that, but I question whether the author knows the definition of the word. According to Merriam-Webster, to grin is "to draw back the lips to show teeth especially in amusement or laughter." Ok. So what sense does it make for a character's smile to fade to a grin? How, exactly, does one grin sadly? Is there such a thing as a melancholy grin? Is it even possible to grin without showing one's teeth? In my opinion, that's classified as a smile. The only reason I belabor this point is because it came up so many times in both books one and two that I started to cringe every time I encountered the word. For me, it was a major distraction from the narrative.

I doubt that I will read book three unless it is free or I am really, really desperate for reading material.

Engaging Read!!
By Booklover
This is the second installment in the Otherworld series by Jenna Elizabeth Johnson. I had forgotten how much I get caught up in this series! I just love these characters! When I sat down with this book.....IT ALL CAME BACK TO ME. I was hooked once again and was regretful every time I had to put this book down.

This book picks up where we left Meghan after Faelorehn. She has been healing and recouping over the summer after her run in with the Morrigan. While Meghan has been healing she has been a bit reclusive and Cade has been MIA, which has caused her to become a little obsessive over him. But hey lets face it I would obsess over him too!

Meghan gains more exposure to the Fae part of her origin thanks to Cade when he finally makes an appearance. He gifts her with a Merlin for her birthday so that she has her own spirit guide and he can then take Fergus with him back to Elie. She learns to care for the little bird and the bird becomes her protector. Meghan goes to Eile on three occasions over the course of the novel and Meghan begins to learn more about herself, her magic and her origins. She also learns a little bit more about the mysterious Cade. I admit I fell in love with Cade. I didn't think I could like him any more than I already did after Faelorehn, but what do you know I was wrong.

In terms of pacing, while the last book worked to set things up this novel has a lot more action and a lot more going on. We learn a lot more about the characters and their world of Eile. The bulk of the action takes place in the Otherworld while the mortal world is relatively calm. Don't mistake me, I don't consider Meghans encounters with the fae creatures in the mortal world to be calm by any means, but the amount of action between the Otherworld and the mortal world are very different. Well I'm not giving out the details because I want to leave that to the reader to discover, but the ending left me anxious and waiting impatiently for the last installment in the series. I can't wait to join these characters again and to see just where things are going to go.

Forgotten Warriors: The 1st Provisional Marine Brigade, the Corps Ethos, and the Korean War (Modern War Studies), by T. X. Hammes

When the Korean War broke out in 1950, the Marine Corps was ordered to deploy an air-ground brigade in less than ten days, even though no such brigade existed at the time. Assembled from the woefully understrength 1st Marine Division and 1st Marine Air Wing units, the Brigade shipped out only six days after activation, sailed directly to Korea, was in combat within ninety-six hours of landing and, despite these enormous handicaps and numerically superior enemy forces, won every one of its engagements and helped secure the Pusan Perimeter. Despite its remarkable achievements, the Brigade's history has largely been lost amid accounts of the sweeping operations that followed. Its real history has been replaced by myths that attribute its success to tough training, great conditioning, unit cohesion, and combat-experienced officers. None of which were true. T. X. Hammes now reveals the real story of the Brigade's success, prominently citing the Corps' crucial ability to maintain its ethos, culture, and combat effectiveness during the period between World War II and Korea, when its very existence was being challenged. By studying the Corps from 1945 to 1950, Hammes shows that it was indeed the culture of the Corps-a culture based on remembering its storied history and learning to face modern challenges-that was responsible for the Brigade's success. The Corps remembered the human factors that made it so successful in past wars, notably the ethos of never leaving another marine behind. At the same time, the Corps demonstrated commendable flexibility in adapting its doctrine and operations to evolutions in modern warfare. In particular, the Corps overcame the air-ground schism that marked the end of World War II to excel at close air support. Despite massive budget and manpower cuts, the Corps continued to experiment and learn even at it clung to its historical lodestones. This approach was validated during the Brigade's trial by fire. More than a mere battle history, Forgotten Warriors gets to the heart of marine culture to show fighting forces have to both remember and learn. As today's armed forces face similar challenges, this book confirms that culture as much as technology prepares America's fighting men and women to answer their country's call.

From One Who Was There
By The Old Gunny
I have just finished this book. Based on the descriptions and some comments, I was ready to seriously criticize many of the statements. I need not do so. I would like to clear some points. No comment on the descriptions of the Brigade actions other than they are as they have been written before. Let me state that I served with H&S Co.1stBn.,5thMar.in the Brigade. The 'myth'that we were led by experienced World War 2 veterans was very real to us. We 'Green' troops (I was a Sgt.but green), only knew that the Staff NCOs and most officers above 2ndLt. had served in the war. That was all we needed to know. Whether they had seen combat or not never entered our minds. I guess that's the Marine Ethos, Culture or whaever you want to call it. They were our leaders, they had served in the War. We knew that Col. Newton had been a POW. I did not know about the lack of combat experience until I read this book. Amazing, from the way they fought their commands, it's no wonder we believed they were experienced combat leaders.
Mr Hammes makes a big point of the limited training during the 1949/1950 Winter. That is very true, as the 5thMar had just been organized in October. The only large operation I remember from that period was the airlift to San Nicholas Island. However there was a substantial trained 'cadre' on hand when the Brigade was formed. Many of us had been with the Division since 1947. I joined 1/6 in Sept. 1947. In October that became BLT-6, 2/6 became BLT-7 (BLT-6 became 1/5, 7 became 2/5 in 1949). From that point on through 1948 and 1949 we were constantly in the field or participating in amphibious operations, real or simulated, MajGen.Erskine made sure of that. Granted, there was turnover as men were discharged. I don't recall the turmoil of 'Summer transfers'. That was probably an officer thing, because we did have at least three battalion commanders that I can recall before Col.Newton. If I recall correctly one was LtCol.H.P.Crowe.
All in all, a fine book though.
EDIT- I'd like to add one more item. During the dark days of '48'49 when the fate of the Corps was being argued in upper echelons, there were many discussions in the barracks. Primary among these were what were to be the troops options. We (PFCs, Cpls and Sgts)generally felt there were only two. We would be released from service or absorbed into the Army. The second option was not acceptable. We were prepared to DESERT rather than serve in the Army. Some had made inquiries about the French Foreign Legion. We felt the situation very seriously, but we never mentioned any of our thoughts to our senior NCOs.

All Marines please note:
By Edward Breslin
I titled my review of this book for all marines(no exes here!) because it really explains the ethos of the marines. The Pusan Perimeter was truly a last stand and the Marines came through. I was in a long time ago(56 to 59) and recall the true austerity that was (and probably still is ) true; Korean War bulk rations (stew etc) in the mess hall years after the war and no frills at all. Dr. Hammes book tells in detail the reason for this thrift. The Marine leadership Knew they would be called, and knew the cupboard was bare.. it was essential to save every asset to be ready. The combat load for Guadalcanal comes to mind when you read of the preparations for Korea and how all elements of the Corps came together to do what would be impossible for any other organization. The book is not an easy read,Dr Hammes includes a lot of scholastic research; but is well worth the effort. I began to understand many things that simply were not clear to a 18 year old kid in 1956. If you are a marine(even an old timer) or wish to be a Marine, the saga of the Marines at the Pusan Perimeter is essential reading. I spent 3 years in Pusan in the late 80s as an army civilian employee and the history of this area was particularly interesting. I knew of the perimeter, but not of the extraordinary effort of what were actually average Marines. Great stuff! read the book and thank thos guys for their accomplishment.

An excellent book on the USMC from 1945-1950
By Stuart M. Kohn
This book is as much about the organizational and doctinal evolution of the US Marine Corps between the end of World War II and the beginning of the Korean War. It is as well written and well researched as it is illuminating. I highly recommend it.

African Muslims in Antebellum America: Transatlantic Stories and Spiritual Struggles, by Allan D. Austin

A condensation and updating of his African Muslims in Antebellum America: A Sourcebook (1984), noted scholar of antebellum black writing and history Dr. Allan D. Austin explores, via portraits, documents, maps, and texts, the lives of 50 sub-Saharan non-peasant Muslim Africans caught in the slave trade between 1730 and 1860. Also includes five maps.

Amazon.com Review
A condensation and updating of the author's African Muslims in Antebellum America: A Sourcebook, this book features the stories of nearly 80 Africans brought to America as slaves between 1730 and 1860. What was unusual about these slaves is that they were Muslims and that they left some sort of documentary record of their presence. Many came from elite classes--one was a military officer, several were schoolteachers, and another was studying to become a religious leader. Using the fragments of evidence still available, Allan D. Austin tells a compelling story that illuminates aspects of American history that are too little known.

From Library Journal
In this updated condensation of his African Muslims in Antebellum America: A Sourcebook (1984), Austin sketches the experiences of some 75 Muslims seized in sub-Saharan Africa and enslaved in North America between 1730 and 1860. Expanding his commentary and condensing his excerpts from autobiographical or biographical narratives, Austin develops the character of individual Muslims more than in his sourcebook. He illuminates their lives and thoughts in ways that reveal the embarrassing limits imposed by race and religion on general historical understanding of first-generation Africans in America. A complement to Richard Brent Turner's Islam in the African-American Experience (LJ 6/1/97), this work is essential for collections on early America, African Americans, and U.S. history or religion or Islam in the United States.?Thomas J. Davis, Arizona State Univ., Tempe

A very important work
By Jonathan Reynolds
Austin's book brings to light an under-examined aspect of African Islam's role in early North America. The short biographical stories of African Muslims have never failed to capture students' imaginations in my classes. A good read and an excellent addition to reading lists for American and African-American History surveys.

An Excellent Account
By Hanif Yazdi
The book is certainly an excellent source of knowledge about a unique facet of the transatlantic slave trade that is frequently overlooked and marginalized. This account, describing the lives of dozens of African Muslims in North America and elsewhere in the New World should serve as a catalyst for further study into the roots of the Muslim American experience. The less than perfect score is due less to the author's compilation, and more to the dearth of extant sources available for analysis. A more in depth study into the lives of existing Muslim communities in places like British Guyana and in Trinidad would likely yield a more comprehensive picture. The account is excellent, but it is by no means definitive, and much research remains to be conducted and codified.

a very good book
By Haseeb
This book is nine chapters of mostly biographical information of muslims from west africa who got caught in the north american slave trade. The first two chapters are an overview the muslims and historical accounts. Chapters 3-9 concentrate on the lives of some of the most well known muslims and what others wrote about them.
The reason why I didn't give this book five stars is because of the author's use of Ar-Rahman as if it is Ibrahim 'adurraHmaan's last name. In the muslim faith, it is blasphemous to refer to a person as Ar-RaHmaan or any of the other names of allah (god). This may seem like a small issue to most, but it is a very serious issue because the author is showing his ignorance of Islam and spreading ignorance among the readers who know little or nothing about Islam. The readers of this book will see the casual use of ar-Rahman and think that it's ok to use it for short 'adurraHmaan. Since the author has a Ph.D, I think he should have had knowledgeble muslims read through his book before publication.
