Tucker's overview illumines the personalities whose alleged revelations spawned historical heresies in all the major cults in the United States. She highlights important controversies within each movement as it aims for religious respectability. Her visits to cult centers and interviews with key members and scholars yield fascinating details, such as why Mormons prohibit hot drinks and how Charles Fillmore, Unity Church founder, rewrote Psalm 23: "The Lord is my banker; my credit is good . . ." Another Gospel pinpoints how the doctrines and practices of a dozen contemporary groups, as well as the New Age Movement, deviate from orthodox Christianity. An Excellent Resource For Believers

As a former member of the LDS church I find this an excellent resource to point out the false doctrines of the Mormons and other false churches. The treatments are excellent and factual...that some members of their organizations dispute the historical facts and doctrinal statements of their founders only shows that they have not made honest efforts to understand what their leaders have propagated. As a "Mormon" I was not aware of many of the more esoteric teachings of the church. I suspect that those below who would argue that this book is not factual have not in fact performed an honest assessment of their church histories and simply are not properly informed. As believers in Christ we must pray for them as my Christian friends and family did for me many years ago. I am forever grateful for people like Ms. Tucker and Walter Martin for showing me the true path to salvation and believe this book is an excellent resource to arm Christians against doctrinal fallacies.

In regards to Mr. Bartlett below, with all due respect, the Mormon church teaches that they are the only true faith much more than Protestant Denominations do. In fact, I find the suggestion that Joseph Smith and the Mormons are somehow more tolerant than other "sects" disingenuous when in fact the truth is they preach all non-Mormons will end up in hell. As an apostate, I am supposedly condemned even further to outer darkness. In this sense, Protestants are much more tolerant and inclusive in that we recognize that there are areas of difference on the nonessentials. No honest Protestant would ever say that Catholics are doomed to hell. Yet the Mormons do condemn them and all other Protestants to eternal damnation. Claiming this book is intolerant because it presents facts is a simplistic argument. I challenge you to refute even one fact presented in this novel in connection with the LDS church. As a former Mormon I refuse to treat any organization as Christian that preaches a false Christ. Mormons can wish to be called Christian all they wish but such a characterization is emphatically untrue.

A respectful treatment of important new religions

I used this book as a textbook for a class on "Christianity and the Cults" at Denver Seminary. This book covers a wide variety of new religious groups, both ones that claim to Christian, like Mormons and JWs, and New Age type groups like Hare Krishnas and Baha'i. The professor preferred this volume to Walter Martin's "Kingdom of the Cults." I believe the reason why is this book is less "harsh" in its evaluations of the teachings of these groups than Martin's.
When this book evaluates each group's teachings, it is more with the attitude of, "This is something that should be considered" than Martins' "I'm right, you're wrong, that settles it" attitude.
For each group, Tucker gives a rather extensive review of its background and history, including a short biography of the group's founder and other important figures in its history. The "distinctive doctrines" of the group are then explained. And lastly, she provides what she calls "challenges" to these doctrines. But she emphasis that this should be done in a respectful manner. She is correct is saying that false teachings do need to be confronted, but it is possible to do so in a loving a respectful manner (1Peter 3:15). However, one deficiency of this book is it does not have that many Scripture references in it. Tucker seems to assume that the reader knows the Biblical basis for such basic Christian doctrines as the Trinity. And she generally provides logical not Biblical refutations of each group's teachings.
To study what the Bible has to say on such doctrines, one would need to consult a book like my "Scripture Workbook: For Personal Bible Study and Teaching the Bible." It presents hundreds of verses supporting basic Christian doctrines, such as the nature of God and the Trinity, and it provides rebuttals to interpretations these groups place on verses they quote in trying to support their doctrines.
Tucker's book is very helpful for the background information on these groups and the respectful attitude she presents. Christians need to have a basic knowledge of what such groups teach or at least a good references like this around this around to consult. But for a Biblical study on such topics, you'll need to consult a book like my "Scripture Workbook."

The France-1940 as a true image of the World-2013.

An excellent book – I can recommend it as probably the most frightful one among other honest mirrors of the XX century. No doubts, Orwell is quite frightful too, but, at least, his world is just a would-be fantasy, while "Scum of the Earth" is reality itself. And it wouldn't be that hopeless reality if it would be limited to France-1940 only (though a loathsome picture of even one ex-great nation's total final corruption is tragic enough, of course). Unfortunately, the reality-2013 is much more sinister, because the past seven decades show that the same cancer of moral degradation is eagerly devouring now all the Western world, from the USA to Australia. Koestler's quote from Maeterlinck’s "Life of the Termites" is so eloquent in showing the present-day utter luck of freedom's support (to tell nothing about the elementary human dignity's support) anywhere, be it state institutes, media, church or family bonds: "…A planter enters his house after an absence of five or six days; everything is apparently as he left it, nothing seems changed. He sits down on a chair, it collapses. He grabs the table to regain his balance, it falls to pieces under his hands. He leans against the central pillar, which gives way and brings down the roof in a cloud of dust". Exactly so – there is no more firm support around us, indeed! The termites have turned into dust all the former defenses of the free society, and (that's probably the worst thing of them all) it's we, it's we ourselves and nobody else, who permitted this overwhelming rot, generously inviting all kinds of termites for a free lunch. Mr. Koestler's book was ridiculed or silenced by termites-friends when his honest narrative of France's collapse could still be fruitfully used as a wise lesson. Now it's only the 100%-true prophecy - but, naturally, it doesn't make "Scum of the Earth" less precious even a tiny bit. The book is really magnificent! Rostislav, Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

How was life in a FRENCH concentration camp during the phoney war of 1939 / 40 ? Arthur will tell you. He also spells out the appalling state of French morale when war on Germany was declared. This must have contributed to them folding so quickly under the Nazi Blitzkreig. The central theme is that the French Govt, identified, and rounded up threats to national security. Today, threats to National security are streaming in at the rate of 1 million plus per annum, to be welcomed with blankets and food parcels.

before the war started. Arthur Koestler's book Scum of the Earth is a readable memoir of his adventures in France just before, and at the beginning of, the Second World War. France is described by the author as "wine and bread" country with little industrialization and a desire to be left alone after going though the anguish of the Franco-Prussian War and World War I. As an anti-Nazi, he was imprisioned by the Franch at the concentration camp as a political prisoner at Verant and suffered various deprivations.

His philosophical outlook is revealed to be one of democratic socialism which he believed was a balance between plutocratic capitalism and communism. The book that I read (an old Macmillian edition) was a short 280 pages long and was easily readable. There are no illustrations in the book, but his written descriptions more than made up for this deficiency. Great intermediate intro to subject

This is a very well written book on digital TV for the intermediate student or reader. It steers a middle course between the more technical or professional level TV books, such as the well known Whitaker volume published by McGraw Hill, and the more basic books such as The Dummies guides. For me, it was just right since the more advanced books were a bit too hard for me yet, but the easier books were too basic.

The book is especially strong on the digital compression issues, and the chapter on middleware and operating systems is really exceptional, a subject that often isn't addressed as completely in some other volumes. The second to the last chapter provides a nice summary of the main features and differences between satellite, terrestrial broadcast, and cable digital TV.

It's still a fairly technical book, though, and you should already have some basic knowledge of what digital TV is and how the three main types, which are terrestrial, satellite, and cable-based digital TV, differ from each other. Obviously, there are many similarities, but they differ most in the use of different signal modulation techniques and the nature and extent of the error correction in order to best make use of the available bandwidth.

For example, obviously satellite and broadcast TV are most susceptible to multipath interference and other types of noise, hence the signal to noise ratio of these technologies is lower than cable. Cable has a much better signal (25 to 30 db instead of perhaps 6 db), and yet suffers from internal echoes due to impedance mismatches along the long segments of cable. This implies that broadcast and satellite TV need more robust and extensive error correction, which is true. However, satellite may reach areas too remote for typical cable.

The book also has several chapters dealing with the more technical aspects of compression, error correction, etc., for those who are interested. Overall, an excellent brief book (less than 300 pages), and it's also nicely bound on good quality paper in signatures so that the binding will hold up better over time and the pages won't fall out.

OK, but nothing new.

Exciting title. Grabs your attention, because it's the way of the future, but reads much like an overview, and doesn't provide much by way of new insight.

Excellent as a reference source. The book is fairly inexpensive, so it is worth the money. If you purchase it, you won't feel cheated.
