Definitely lacking, but OK for traditional mortgage products

I have to say that Fabozzi has the formula down pat--he gets "guest writers" to contribute various chapters to this book and does very little writing himself. The result is a disjointed, sometimes repetitious, other times incomplete volume. This book focuses extensively on agency mortgages--Ginnies, Fannies, Freddies--and speaks only a bit to the Alt-A, subprime and more exotic privately-originated mortgage markets. To call this book comprehensive would be a lie. Although this book was highly recommended to me by a PM at a traditional long-only manager, I can only guess that previous versions were better, because this one was certainly a high-priced primer that still left many areas of the market uncovered. Areas that are glaringly missing (beyond non-agency topics) include the role of hedge funds, loss mitigation/foreclosure processes, more info on EPDs, and the erosion of lending standards/rise of the subprime market. I think that a chapter on common mortgage origination fraud issues is also merited.

This book is good for the basics, on agencies. Beyond that, it may leave you scratching your head and wondering, "And...." because there is a palpable sense of incompletion. Borrow this book from someone else that already has it--don't buy it!

useful book but...

Fabozzi's MBS handbook is quite useful, but it's not what I'm here to review: For some reason it is absurdly expensive on amazon. If you go to abebooks or half or one of the other online vendors you can easily find copies for under $5. No need to spend $40+ for a copy from amazon.

The story takes place between September 21st and November 9th, 1621, and is told in parallel narratives by a 14-year-old Wampanoag Indian boy, Dancing Moccasins, and a 6-year-old Pilgrim boy named Resolved White. Crisp, full-color photos taken at Plimoth Plantation offer an accurate historical reenactment of the harvest days and celebrations that occurred between the Indians and Pilgrims. Historical notes and descriptions of the living-history museum add the perfect ending to this very informative and simply stated offering. Whether readers are interested in a good story or want to learn more about Colonial America, maybe comparing and contrasting cultures, or are interested in how to get involved in historical reenactments, this offering will be an asset to any social studies curriculum.

An accurate historical perspective on the 1621 Thanksgiving Feast

This book is hard to find now, although I did order one directly from Plimoth Plantation because I loved the copy we checked out at our local library so much.

It's a photographic and textual historical interpretation of the "first Thanksgiving" as seen through the eyes of a native Wampanoag youth and a "pilgrim" colonist boy. I think it's great for grades 1-4.

It does not purport to tell the whole story of colonization in the New World by Europeans coming over on the Mayflower and other ships, but instead sets out to tell the story of the harvest celebration of 1621 and what may have happened between September 21 and November 9 as based on historical documents. It puts to rest the tired old myth of the grateful pilgrims inviting the friendly Indians to feast. The last 4 pages of the book go into more detail. This section is easily skipped over if it's too much for younger kids, but adults or older kids may find some of the specific historical details interesting and informative ("Squanto's" real name was Tisquantum, Lincoln declared a day of thanksgiving on August 6 1863 and another that November). There is information about the ongoing customs of the Wampanoag people, the traditions among the colonists, how the English (colonists) ate, a recipe, and information about Plimoth Plantation and the historical interpreters.

no more black hats and silver buckles

If you're tired of seeing your children come home from school mid-November wearing those awful construction paper hats and mock indian feather bonnets, do yourself a favor and BUY THIS BOOK! (Do the teacher a favor -- buy one for her, and maybe one for your school library, too.) Waters and Kendall have joined together again to explode the myths that currently abound in the land of kid-lit. The dialogue for Resolved (pilgrim) and Dancing Mocasins (Wampanoag) is formal, yet easy to understand, and the accompanying photographs are wonderfully rich and vivid.

"Giving Thanks" - a review

If you are looking for good book to read to young children at Thanksgiving, this isn't it. Not only is it not a good read-aloud, it argues against the traditional telling of the Pilgrims story.

In fact, at the end of the book the author, Kate Waters, talks about how the traditional turkey-pilgrim-indian autumn feast is a mythical occurrence. She says that while historians don't know what `really' happened, it wasn't what the present day holiday conjures up in all of our collective memories.

Instead, what we should know is that European fishermen and traders brought plague that killed whole villages. And that it was just a coincidence that there were any Native Americans at Plimoth (alternate spelling of Plymouth) on the day there was to be a harvest feast, an event that was, in fact, rather a rare occurrence of celebration for the Pilgrims as they did not deem it appropriate celebrate *any* holidays, not even Easter and Christmas. (ho-ho-ho)

Which brings us to the substance of the book when considered for older readers (older tweenies or teenagers perhaps). It is an attractive book to look at. There are pictures of re-enactors in a colonial setting, but it basically centers around a time where all the houses are built and everybody is fat and happy. No Mayflower. No hardship.

And ironically, while the author argues that you won't find the `true' story of life in early colonial times in other books, you won't find it here either because the author's own re-enactors - pilgrams and native americans alike-- are incredibly clean and tidy individuals. Everyone in crisp linen and wool or deerskin. Even the children! LOL

Two Stars. A terrible book for young children. It might hold more interest for older children as the pictures are interesting.

Jessie had been dreaming of a tall, dark-eyed man for weeks and getting no sleep. In each dream the man would call to her to come to him and called her his "soulmate", weird right? Nothing could surprise Jessie more than when her dream man showed up at her job, and again asking her to come with him. After she convinces him to meet her for lunch, they go for a walk, he mentions getting her to his "ship" and a "mating impulse", then she's in his arms headed for a dark alley. Next thing Jessie knows, she's in a room with a view of Earth. It's official Jessie you've been abducted into space to become the bride King Ameer.....congrats!!

All these stories of Astria are nice quick reads. Just the thing to snuggle up in bed with to provide fuel for dreams., editing could be better. Some of the sentences just don't make sense. Wording or phrases are awkward at time. I found mysel stoping and trying to figure out what author meant. Yes I would recommend to others, especially if they had Kindle Unlimited account.

Inca Religion and Customs is the second translation by Roland Hamilton from Cobo's massive work. Despite his obvious Christian bias as a Jesuit priest, Cobo objectively and thoroughly describes many of the religious practices of the Incas. He catalogs their origin myths, beliefs about the afterlife, shrines and objects of worship, sacrifices, sins, festivals, and the roles of priests, sorcerers, and doctors.

The section on Inca customs is equally inclusive. Cobo covers such topics as language, food and shelter, marriage and childrearing, agriculture, warfare, medicine, practical crafts, games, and burial rituals.

Because the Incas apparently had no written language, such postconquest documents are an important source of information about Inca life and culture. Cobo's work, written by one who wanted to preserve something of the indigenous culture that his fellow Spaniards were fast destroying, is one of the most accurate and highly respected.

Well written, easily understood, yet not too basic, the author weaves and explains scientific and mathematical principles in a story-like form that entranced my homeschooled fifth-grader. This is one he'll want to read over and over--not a book he felt he "had" to read. I highly recommend its purchase.

About the Author
Melanie Milburne read her first Harlequin at age seventeen in between studying for her final exams. After completing a Masters Degree in Education she decided to write a novel in between settling down to do a PhD. Maya looked at the dipstick in shock. Her throat closed over as if a hand had locked around her neck as the two blue lines appeared Positive.

She sat on the edge of the bathtub, her legs shaking so much she had to clamp her knees together. Hope flickered brightly and then just as quickly waned.

It couldn't be true.

She took a deep breath and looked at the stick again. She blinked once, twice, three times but the lines were the same as before.

The doorbell suddenly rang with an incessant peal and she sprang to her feet, her heart knocking against her chest wall like a pendulum pushed by a madman. She quickly stashed the test kit in the nearest drawer beneath the twin basins and took a long slow breath to steady herself.

Gonzo was already at the door, barking joyfully in greeting, but Maya didn't need the dog's behaviour to signal to her who was at the door. No one rang the doorbell quite the same way as her soon-to-be ex-husband Giorgio Sabbatini did. He always pressed it too hard and for too long. He was summoning her and he clearly would not be taking no for an answer.

Maya fixed a deliberately cool expression on her face as she opened the door. 'G… Giorgio,' she said, hoping the catch in her voice wouldn't betray her. 'I thought you were sending one of your staff to pick up Gonzo. Isn't that the arrangement we agreed on?'

'I decided to come in person this time.' He bent down to ruffle the ecstatic dog's ears before he rose back to his full height, his tall frame towering over her. His dark brown eyes glittered with a sardonic light as they met hers. 'I am quite surprised to find you at home,' he said. 'I thought you might be out with your new Englishman lover. What was his name again? Hugh? Herbert?

Maya bit the inside of her mouth, wishing, not for the first time, she hadn't gone on that stupid blind date set up by a friend from her yoga class. 'Howard,' she said tightly. 'And it wasn't anything like the press reported it.'

One of Giorgio's brows lifted in a cynical arc. 'So he didn't rip your clothes off in the hallway of his apartment and have his wicked way with you?'

Maya threw him a venomous look as she closed the door behind him with a snap. 'No,' she said. 'That is more your style, is it not?'

He gave her an indolent smile which made every hair on the back of her neck lift up in reaction. 'You were with me all the way, caral he said in a tone that was gravelly and rough and so deep she felt a guilty shiver of remembered pleasure cascade down her spine and bury itself in that hot secret place between her thighs.

Maya turned on her heel rather than face him with her colour so high. She still cringed in shame at how she had behaved the night of his brother's wedding. She still wasn't exactly sure what had precipitated it. Had it been the champagne or the pain of finally letting go? Break up sex, that was what it was called. It didn't mean anything, certainly not to him. He had probably bedded several women since they had separated. According to the latest press report, he was currently seeing a lingerie model based in London. Reading that had been like a dart to Maya's heart but she would rather die than reveal that to him.

She felt him come up behind her, her skin prickling all over and her nostrils flaring as she breathed in his citrus-based aftershave overlaid with his particular male smell. All her senses—the ones she had sworn would always be switched to neutral when he was around—turned to full throttle. She felt her heart give a stutter when his hands came to rest on the top of her shoulders, her breathing stopping altogether when his tall body brushed against hers from behind.

'You smell nice,' he said, bending his head so his mouth almost touched the side of her neck. 'Is that a new perfume you are wearing?'

Somehow she got her voice to work. 'Get your hands off me, Giorgio,' she said. Before I turn around and fall into your arms and make a complete and utter fool of myself all over again.

His hands tightened for a fraction of a second, long enough for her heart rate to go up another notch. 'Our divorce isn't final until the last of the paperwork is sorted,' he said, his breath lifting the hairs that had come loose from her makeshift ponytail. 'Maybe we can make the most of the time before the ink dries, hmm?'

Maya knew what this was about and it hurt much more than the lingerie model. It wasn't their broken marriage he was fighting for, it was his fortune. The Sabbatini family was as good as Italian royalty. When she had married Giorgio five years ago there had been no prenuptial agreement prepared. It was an unwritten, unspoken law: their marriage was meant to last, as every other Sabbatini marriage had in the past. But Maya wondered if any other Sabbatini marriage had endured the heartache theirs had and survived.

She very much doubted it.

She turned to face him, her heart tightening all over again as she looked into his inscrutable dark-as-night eyes. 'What do you want?' she asked.

His thumbs started to knead her knotted shoulders until she was sure she was going to melt into a pool at his feet. She fought the response, clamping her teeth together as she put her hands against his chest to push him

away. 'Will you stop touching me, for God's sake?' she railed at him.

He captured her hands effortlessly, holding them in one of his as if they were a child's. 'It was good that night, si?' he said. 'I can't remember a time when it was better, can you?'

Maya swallowed unevenly. She had tried so hard not to think of that night, how wonderful it had been to make love with such abandon. No temperature or ovulation charts, no hormone injections—just good old-fashioned bed-wrecking sex, except they hadn't quite made it to the bed. But this visit: was it about a rerun of that passionate night or a truce to secure his assets?

'Giorgio.that night was a crazy, stupid mistake,' she said, not trusting herself to hold his gaze.

She pulled her hands out of his and moved away, crossing her arms over her middle. It was too soon to tell him, of course it was. It would jinx things just like before. How many times had she held up the dipstick in joy, only to have her hopes and dreams smashed like priceless porcelain on a pavement a week or two later? There were no guarantees this time would be any different. If it wasn't meant to be, at least Giorgio would be free to move on with someone else who could give him what he wanted most. They would both be free to move on. She had wasted five years of his life, not to mention her own. He was thirty-six years old. Most of his friends and colleagues had two or three children by now.

She had given him none.

Giorgio followed her into the tiny salone. Maya felt his gaze on her, the heat of it, the slow burn of it peeling every layer of her skin until she felt raw and exposed. She had to hold herself together. She couldn't come unstuck and get all emotional and needy in front of him. She was supposed to be over all of that now. She had worked hard at it, working out new priorities, new directions, none of which included Giorgio. Cool and in control was the only way to go with him. She had to prove to him that he no longer had any emotional or sensual power over her. She was her own person now, determined to move on with her life.

She was stronger now, much stronger. The six-month separation had done that for her. She no longer lived in the shadow of Giorgio's money and prestige. She was making a way for herself, providing for her future by restarting her career, which she had naively cast aside in order to fit in with what Giorgio and his family had expected of her. She was quite proud of what she had achieved in the time they had been apart. She had been looking forward to starting afresh until this latest hiccup had thrown her off course. Could he see the secret she was trying to hide from him? Was there some clue on her face or in her body, even at this early stage? He seemed to be looking at her so intently, his dark gaze so piercing she felt exposed and raw, as if he could see into her soul.

'What is this I hear about you moving to London?' he asked.

She faced him with a set mouth, her shoulders pulled back in determination. 'I have an interview for a teaching position at a fee paying school. I am on the shortlist.'

A frown brought his brows together. 'Are you going to take it if it is offered to you?'

She let her arms drop by her sides in an effort to look composed. 'I don't see why not,' she said, sending him a pointed look. 'I have nothing to keep me in Italy.'

Wow, a more realistic and balanced harlequin novel

what seemed to start off as a typical fairy tale - Maya, a poor orphan and Giorgo, a wealthy business man complete with a loving family- starts heading towards a disasterous end as the couple fail to produce the much awaited heir to the family dynasty. Four miscarriages, lots of pressure from the family and media, being surrounded by fertile couples with kids and the increasing friction between the couple have them in the throes of the divorce process. And, yes, as the title aptly puts it, the couple had one last night at Giorgo's brother's wedding with unexpected consequences...

Admit it, in most harlequin novels, the guys are well, jerks, idiots, arrogant guys, but they get away with it by being portrayed as alpha males, dominant, arrogant, traditional, stubborn, etc. (Though i suspect if the shoe is on the other foot, the females would be called, er hum, less pleasant words). Thus, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the novel was more balanced. It was not a case of the guy being an arrogant ass, with absolutely no feelings for the heroine whatsoever, treat her like dirt and suddenly hey presto, finds that he loves her! (this kind of scenario often makes you think, how can a guy who loves a girl treat her that way?) This book is more naunced and you get to see some of the psyche and thinking behind the male lead in the novel. I liked that the hero did seem to sincerely care for the heroine.

I found this book thoroughly enjoyable and quite unique as it is about a married couple going through a divorce. Not because of the typical "misunderstanding" that a (insert male or female lead name) had an affair, rather because of more realistic issues like a lot of friction between the couple, which was aggravated by their failure to produce a long awaited heir for his family fortune. All in all, a really good read!

Made the Grade: The Sabbatini Brothers Series, Book 2

3 out of 5 stars! This book deals with what it takes to hold a family together while dealing with plenty of tragedies going on around them. It's a very sweet book. I enjoyed Maya's newfound independence, in addition to how Giorgio and Maya build back their relationship.

On a personal note, I liked this book more because I could relate to the uncertainty of being pregnant and not sure, if it would last but still hanging out to the hope of it. The way Maya's struggle was written made this book more humbling and relatable to me.

I recommend it to anyone who likes to read quick, sweet, and spicy romance books!

An Incredible Romance. "Sabbatini men play for keeps..losing is not in their vocabulary.."

One Night Heir - was a sexy and turbulent love story by Melanie Milburne. It's part of her Sabbatini Brothers series and it's Girogio and Maya's love story.

What a predicament......Maya is soon to divorce her husband, had break-up sex at his brother Luca's wedding and now she found out after all of this time, she was finally expecting his baby and heir. The entire family had been praying this would happen. No more temperatures or ovulation charts, injections. She had felt in her marriage that she had wasted five years of his life by not giving him a baby. He was moving on and he was seeing a lingerie model. She would tell him later when it was safe to do so.

I could just imagine how hard it was from this couple. When she met Giorgio years ago, it was like a fairy tale. He had showered her with diamonds and she believed she would one day get the happy ending. He needed a wife and an heir. Each of her miscarriages had been hard on her, they were her babies and she had named them all. However, Girogio didn't want to discuss any of it. Of course, there were also the family dinners when members mentioned how one of his friends had fathered a child. How horrible for Maya. She had been like a business transaction and they had both failed their marriage.

Their marriage was soon to end. However, Girogio stopped by to invite Maya to his grandfather's 90th birthday party, because he wanted her there.only to find out Maya was leaving for England and hopefully take a teacher's position. And then he dropped the bomb, his grandfather was dying and he wanted her to move back home with him and pretend they had made up. He was going to stay at her rented villa until his was refurbished. And then while preparing for bed, he found the pregnancy test and exploded. He also reflected on everything in his marriage, the death of his father, the death of his infant sister and how at times he felt he had thrust his wife into situations she wasn't prepared for, corporate, family and the press. With Maya being pregnant and would she carry the baby to term? It was also a time for reflection for Giorgio, the past pregnancies and how he reacted.

With the new found information Maya was pregnant, their marriage took on a new dimension. Maya had only wanted her husband to love her and he had wanted to protect her. I don't believe love was in his vocabulary. After he had found his baby sister dead in her bed, witnessed his father have an affair, his mother's despair, and his father's death it had made him to be strong for his family. They had a second chance at happiness and a baby and I wondered could this couple make it work? Because for Girogio, emotion frightened him, when you loved it was taken away from you.

Their road was a rocky one but in the end they seemed to share their feelings more, Girogio seemed to mellow more and even though he hadn't loved her when he married her, in the end he realized he did. Their dream of having a child, a son came true, Marco...."their gift from God".

Human Relations on the Street

I purchased this book as a required text book in one of my Criminal Justice classes. I thought it very strange to have a Human Relations text book as a requirement, but after getting into the text found it very appropriate for police work. The author points out a plethora of facts that would help anyone dealing with people on a day to day basis. It is not a large textbook, is packed full of ideas, and is easy to follow. Class time was kept at a minimum, and no extra help was needed from my professor. I believe this text would definitely be bookshelf material for those of you dealing with the public.

Worst book ever

I have never seen so many spelling errors and horribly pedantic and inappropriate, childish writing as a text book or ANY book. Ever. I have already told my instructor what possessed her to use this book. It is awful. Don't waste your money. Here is a good example poor grammar and poor use of language:
....."and therefore wear business attire above the waste." WASTE? really? Shouldn't that be WAIST? If not, then I had quite a visual on that one. This is just one a god knows how many and I am only on chapter 8. I can't put in all the similar ones I found along the way to this one. Not only is the writing pedantic but the editor needs some grammar and spelling lessons. Its hard to give any credibility to what I am supposed to be learning when the book in not credible. Don't waist (lol) your money. Or is that waste? Lots of those kinds of errors.....

This book is so lame that I actually recommend you avoid any class that requires it, if at all possible.

I really wish I could get my money back from my college bookstore. This is the textbook for a basic Human Relations class that is required for all students at the community college I attend. Human Relations is not my strongest skill so I was actually looking forward to the class and the book, expecting some information that might help me at work. Unfortunately I am really disappointed in the class and the book. The information is SO basic and obvious. It is useless to me. This is an actual quote from the book, from chapter two, which describes differences between people, one of which is VALUES:

"Under the best of circumstances, the values of employees mesh with those required by the job. When this state of congruence exists, job performance is likely to be higher. A national survey of managers investigated the fit between the values of managers and those of their organizations. (One such mesh would be a highly ethical person working for a highly ethical firm.) A major finding was that managers who experienced a good fit were more successful and more likely to believe that they could reach their career goals. They were also more confident about remaining with their present firm and more willing to work long hours."

Wow. Amazing. Who would have thunk it? And I am really glad they gave an example of a match between employee values and company values (highly ethical is a match with highly ethical, so I guess if they are the same that means they match!) That is about as educational as me telling you that when I don't hate my boss I am less likely to want to punch him in the neck. I don't know what else to say. This book is a pathetic waste of my time, money and thought processes, and I feel sorry for you if, like me, you are required to read it. Honestly, I actually keep re-reading it, thinking I must be missing the point, that there must be more to it, that it can't be so lame and pointless.... But it is!

THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER HUMAN RELATIONS TEXTBOOK OUT THERE!!!

By the way, I am also taking another class called "Business Communication" that covers similar topics. The book we are using for that class is EXCELLENT: "Business Communication: Process & Product", by Mary Ellen Guffey (5th Edition). I am so grateful to have a good textbook like that one, because unfortunately crummy books like "Human Relations" by DuBrin are all too common.

a short thought provoking book

This is a very short book, less than 76 pages long, plus appendix, index, etc. The pages are small, too.

The book is written assuming that you have some familiarity with TCM, the Yi-Jing (I Ching), Taoism, Chinese martial arts, etc. Although the book is written very clearly, and the practices described seem quite simple, I think this book is best for someone with a lot of background in this area.

The first section is an extensive discourse (36 pages) on the 8 trigrams of the Bagua (Pakua), mostly about the four cardinal trigrams Heaven, Earth, Fire and Water. There is a long discussion of how these four relate, and how this relates to alchemy - the Taoist process of refining and transmuting the energies of the body to create the `elixir of immortality'.

Most of the discussion of the trigrams, the bagua, and the relative positions of the trigrams in the bagua is over my head. Second, the author talks in terms of earth, air, fire, water, which I believe is a western perspective. My (limited) understanding of Chinese alchemy is that it is based on the five elements (metal, fire, water, wood, earth). While I think it is possible that the author is mistaken in some way about the relevant symbolism, this does not (to my mind) in any way invalidate the techniques.

Next there are 36 pages on the five techniques. All five are the same posture - wuji standing - zhan zhaung standing in the wuji position, and the book gives instructions on how to stand. Each technique must be mastered (and the result obtained) before moving on to the next one, and the expected results from each technique are described pretty clearly.

The first technique is `man united with heaven and earth" and the book claims that correct practice of this will result in the eventual opening of the ming men. The next, the `practice of air' involves sinking the qi down. The practice of fire involves awakening the navel; the practice of earth, surrendering to gravity; the practice of water involves accumulating water and starting the process of making steam.

"The practice of wuji qigong is a long term undertaking...years not months." The book is full of very realistic and very practical information as well as extensive cautions and warnings not to over-do the practices - he talks about building up to 10 minutes a day and eventually 10 minutes twice a day.

I found this to be a very interesting book. Since I do not have any personal experience of the alchemy of fire and water ("kan & li") all I can say is that the descriptions sound good to me. I have been studying the lower levels of Taoist alchemy with Mantak Chia, whose books on the Fusion meditations and lesser Kan and Li ("The Taoist Soul Body") spell out another set of methods of Taoist Alchemy.

The question is, of course, do the methods in the book work? They sound plausible, however I was left with the feeling that the author has rediscovered a fragment of a larger picture.

Impressive
By ignorance is bliss
Within a few weeks, the information in this book accelerated my qigong sessions.

If it is, indeed, a "shortcut" as suggested by another reviewer, it is effective.

Curious why the author chose to associate this practice with the Western four elements, rather than the Chinese five, but really it is of no consequence. The practice works, and works well.

Very nice intro to stance work and Wu Chi process

I appreciate the simplicity of this book. Indeed it is so simple the pertinent points might sneak by. Though you could read it in one sitting it is best to take small chunks and assimilate before going to the next step. No hurry with this practice.
