Nuts and Bolts

I tend to read books of this type as a college text with highlighter in hand. The highlighter was not used as much as I thought it would be. A lot of info on what Profit Charts has and can do, but no insight into using it, or perhaps I missed that part because I tend to zone out when the obvious is sort of restated. The book almost goes too far in telling you what every click on tab will show, but I was looking for something to tell me that 'When you see this, it means ... and you should react thus if you are in position A, and counter if you are in Position B.' This is more of a software guide and not a how to. I was disappointed considering the 4 other stellar reviews.

A real pro and a great guy, this is a must read for all T.A. enthusiasts. A slightly different way of looking at charts than most, but it will open your eyes as you pull back to view top and bottoms differently. I know, I did. Great read, thanks Tim!

Very powerful, moving account of what actually happened the night Oscar Grant was murdered

Thandisizwe Chimurenga speaks as though she was at the trial, every step of the way, because she was. Ms. Chimurenga provides a detailed, blow-by-blow account of the actions leading up to, during, and after Oscar Grant's murder, while tying it to the deliberate state-sanctioned violence occurring daily, against all people of color in the United States. She not only states what matters, but why it matters. I highly recommend this book.

A must have book !!!!!!

I thought the book was very informative of the way white supremacy is actually portrayed. I really enjoyed the challenge of reading the book it gave me the opportunity to analyze and look into the case as if it were my job. You stated a lot of good facts in the book on white supremacy and what it really is. My favorite parts in the book would have to be when you listed the reasons why police always get away with murder and the comments people were saying. Although the comments were extremely painful for me to read I sat a read them just to understand what these people had to say. I believe this is a book that everyone should read it informs you on a lot of things you may have never knew. I know before I read this book that I was never aware of these things and I never took the time to actually learn about them but then I read this book and it opened me to actually critically look at everything around me and ask questions that relate to the situation. A total thumbs up for this book. Great Job

Good text on just about every subject of drug abuse

The authors, Darryl Inaba and William Cohen do a great job of keeping this book very open and simple. They cover almost every drug (5th edition) which a counselor may run into when talking with his students. As a research or higher level order book though, this would not do as it is just too brief on most subjects to really get to know indepth pharmacology or pharmacodynamics on most of the psychoactive drug actions. There is a lot of history, and even a CD-ROM to help you familiarize yourself with many topics of addiction in a very short period of time. In some sections, there is some really good information on drugs I have not seen on the pharmacy shelves for at least 12 years. If you are someone who wants to quickly get to know the subject of psychoactive drugs, then I highly recommend this book for you. His vocabulary is such that it is easy to read, without too much of a serious tone-- and you will not even need a highliner to remember the facts. This book is packed with knowledge. Very enjoyable reading for a change, with lots of good and interesting photographs that make you think. You will enjoy this book, for it is written in a very unique format that makes you want to relax and just turn each page and learn. guyairey

Review for 3rd edition of same book, pub 1997

Note: I have not seen the newest edition - I borrowed the former (3rd) edition of this book (published 1997)...but it's SO good I'm contemplating the purchase of my own copy...but it's a GREAT book...I have paged through countless books of this and other types - this one is vastly superior to anyting else I've seen. It is complete and honest. Quite admirably, it is executed without a pro or anti-drug agenda, it is (in my opinion) a truly unbiased and informative work on the subject of psychoactive chemicals. It covers their history, use, effects, abuse, dependence, tolerance, and withdrawl.
The '97 edition was very well organized. It included all the right details - a skillful balance between completeness, efficiency in conveying the necessary details, and ease of reading (agreeably medium density material). It is a comprehensive work, suitable for both browsing and reference.
I haven't seen the newest, 4th edition (year 2000), but the 1997 edition was bettered in every way, by the inclusion of anonymous, convincing, informative accounts of recovering addicts. Those really shed light on the drug experience, lifestyle, highs and lows alike...it is very easy reading - Dr. Inaba (and his colleagues) have written an excellent work: informative, comprehensive, accessible, and entertaining (with tasteful humor).
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about psychoactive drugs and their many facets; whether you're trying to understand your teenager, experimenting yourself, or self-educating as a policy-analysis primer... this is the book for you.
Note: this book does not include information on the preparation of any "drugs", it is strictly an educational reference, not a drug user's guide.

The best

An excellent, full color and clearly laid out guide to nearly every drug on the market today, illegal, recreational, and medicinal. Lots of photographs, quotes from people who have used the drugs, side effects, addiction and safety information, charts and graphs. This book was a help to me both for researching a book I was writing and for looking up the drugs my 89-year-old grandmother is taking for her pain.
I highly recommend this book.

In this story of love and adventure set during the Napoleonic Wars, Japonica Fortnom, the orphaned daughter of a wealthy merchant for the East India Company who has grown up in Persia, finds herself in Bagdad, serving as nurse to the dying Viscount Shrewsbury, chaperoned only by her Scottish maid, Aggie. As the Persians form a strategic alliance with the French, the lives of all British citizens in Bagdad are endangered. The viscount sends Japonica on an urgent mission to the only man who can help the three of them escape to a safer area of Persia, the mysterious "Hind Div" (Indian Devil). The Hind Div is every woman's dream lover-- darkly handsome, highly intelligent, and downright dangerous. He has been told that he will be assassinated that night, so when Japonica shows up in his lair in disguise with a note from the viscount, the Hind Div tosses the note aside and assumes she is the assassin sent to kill him. After drugging and seducing her, he agrees to her request for aid in escaping from Bagdad. A few weeks later, Japonica learns that the Hind Div is dead, and she reluctantly agrees to accept a marriage proposal from the dying viscount so that she can grant his last wish to settle the futures of the five young daughters that he has left behind in England. After burying her new husband, however, Japonica unexpectedly finds herself pregnant with the Hind Div's child. In many ways, this is a coming of age novel, but it is filled with all of the excitement and passion of a great romance. A Lot of Drama

While Persian Japonica Fortnom is nursing the dying Viscount Shrewsbury of Baghdad, he asks her to help him escape Baghdad because Napoleon has started a war there. Japonica turns to Hind Div (who some believe him to be a spy, thief among other things) for help. Hind Div does not believe Japonica is telling the truth so he drugs and rapes her. Afterward, Hind Div realizes that Japonica is a virgin; he then read the letter she has for him from Viscount Shrewsbury and realizes she was telling the truth.
Read Mischief to find out how Japonica deal with all of the drama of marrying the dying Viscount Shrewsbury in order to be the guardian for his children and how she copes with carrying Hind Div's child.

My favorite of this series!

This is one of my favorite romances. It appealed to me for many reasons - the exotic location, the theme of redemption, and the juxtaposition of background characters who provide much of the story's drama. I'm partial to historical romance, but I'm also a very visual person. Laura Parker weaves such a vivid characterization and detailed setting that I feel this is a story I've "seen" many times.

Jeremy Duff is Director of Lifelong Learning in the Liverpool Diocese, and Canon of Liverpool Cathedral. Previously he taught Greek and New Testament at Oxford University.

David Wenham is Dean of Wycliffe Hall, Oxford and one of the foremost British Evangelical New Testament scholars.

Commencing summer 2005 Jonathan T. Pennington is Assistant Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His previous publications include Vocabulary Words for New Testament Greek published in 2001.

It would be better with the accents.

(I cannot comment on the CD because I have not heard it; my review is on only the textbook)
Jeremy Duff's book is a good review for for people with some experience in reading Koin� Greek. But it would be somewhat terse for the absolute beginner. His method of presenting concepts in complete categories is quite engaging. For example, In his chapter on the subjunctive mood, he gives this overview with examples of the instances when Koin� writers used the subjunctive mood:

* Indefinite clauses: whoever, wherever, whenever...
* Purpose clauses: in order that...
* Exhortations: Let's...
* Deliberations: What shall I...?
* Prohibitions: Don't...!
* Emphatic negative future: I will never...

He discusses in a similar way participles, complex sentences, conjunctions, prepositions, the perfect tenses, and so forth. This is a smooth way of reviewing these topics. This book also offers copious sentence exercises for practicing these constructions.

The only part of his book that I do not approve of is the lack of written accents. In spite of the attractive way that this book presents Greek, A learner will have difficulty in pronouncing words because they carry no accent marks. Mr. Duff states that "the accents are not taught in this book for three important reasons:

* Accents were not present in written Greek in the New Testament period.
* The rules of accentuation are complicated, and you have enough to learn.
* Accents don't help you translate or understand Greek."

The accents are helpful to me personally for memorizing vocabulary because they indicate which syllable to stress. Knowing where to put the stress on a word is an aid to memorization because it helps me to give a rhythm and a pronunciation to the word. Knowing the stress is also important for conjugating verbs and for declining nouns because all verbs and many nouns change their stress as they are inflected. Moreover, I have never seen a Greek bible text without accents. New Testament and Septuagint texts always indicate accents. So also do the writings of the Christian fathers. I imagine that a neophyte to Koin� Greek may well experience some frustration while trying to learn Greek words without the accents.

Otherwise, Elements of New Testament Greek is an engaging read.

Delivers Promise

As stated in the book on page 1, the aim of the book is "To help you learn enough Greek to read the New Testament." Without a teacher, I worked through the chapters and did the all of the "A" exercises at the end of each chapter. After completing all of the chapters, I am happy to say I can read the New Testament, not perfectly, mind you, but with the help of a dictionary and Duff's book I can get through just about any passage.

I found the explanations clear and consise and I never felt overwhelmed or lost as I have with some other texts.

Good approach, but needs a second, corrected printing to be issued soon

I'd like to be able to give this grammar a '5' rating, but that may have to wait until after the next printing. I have studied and taught foreign languages, and so I feel qualified to say that Duff's approach to teaching Koine Greek is sound. He presents the grammar in a logical order and builds concepts one upon another as a good grammar should do for the beginning student. Unfortunately, there are several problems with the book: 1) There are far too many errors, even for a first printing; vital items are at times omitted from some of the grammar charts, which obviously makes learning those concepts correctly a difficult task. I'm not saying that Duff is incorrect, but that the book was carelessly edited. 2) There are some things to which Duff does give short shrift (for example, he mentions 'attraction' with relative pronouns in a small footnote as if it were unusual; however, 'attraction' is actually the norm in such cases and is an important concept to understand). 3)the website with "useful helps" seems to have been abandoned; there are some useful PowerPoint slides which can be downloaded (and some links to other sites are given), but there are no additional exercises or other materials as promised on the back cover of the book. I can only assume that this book was rushed to print since there are so many editing errors and the website is incomplete. Still, in spite of my criticisms, I believe this could be a good beginning grammar; I hope to see the errors corrected and the website completed so that it will become just that.

Addendum: The accompanying CD's are excellent helps for the beginning student of Koine Greek; for any student who does purchase this book, I highly recommend buying the version of the book that comes with the CD's.

A Book that Applies Attachment Theories to Marriage Relationships

The attachment theory primarily describes the experiences children have with their caregiver and how those experiences inform their life decisions. I was interested in how the author had applied this theory to couple relationships. The author is very methodical in explaining his clinical approach and the methods he used. I found this aspect a little boring since I am not a clinician however, I found a lot of useful information throughout the text. The author defines four types of attachments: secure, preoccupied, fearful and dismissing. He also describes couples who combine the same or different types of attachment styles. The second half of the book contains a number of chapters about specific extreme cases that are pertinent to clinicians. His recommendation for treatment is that the couple participate in psychotherapy where the clinician performs the function of a "secure base" and the couple attaches and then explores solutions to their individual issues while engaging in a joint discussion.

Charles Derry masterfully explaines the various genres of suspense and thrillers in a clear, clean cut book that will open your eyes to the true mystery of mysterys, and the suspense thriller.
