The pace of this book can easily win a race against a turtle and a snail, a race to see who is slower.

My first two attempts did not charge beyond 200 pages. I have to ask, if this book was not authored by the almighty Stephen King, would anybody have the courage and stubbornness to dig through the pages and see the end of the book?

This is my third attempt to read this highly acclaimed book, and this time I am listening to an audio book - I can't do anything but driving and listening. So this time, I may get lucky.

Frankly, I lost track of all the characters after page 10. The number of characters we were fed makes me felt like I was reading a phone book - names printed on pages, and after a few pages, everybody looked the same.

The pace of this book can easily win a race against a turtle and a snail, a race to see who is slower. Mr. King must have believed that we could live for at least another billion years. There's so much background information about each main character that I feel like if they don't die in the next chapter, I am going to kill them myself. That way, their obituaries would at least be interesting.

After 200 pages, I have yet to see any action or even an interesting scene that lasts more than two pages. Why should I care about Larry Underwood? What's the importance of Franny's baby? And Stu? I got it. He's not sick but so what and who cares? What does anything have anything to do with the main plot???

Last but not least, each sentence in his dialogue seems to end with "He said calmly" and "She said triumphantly." Really? I was of the opinion that each adjective and adverb with more than 2 syllables must be cut from the novel, and Mr. King himself said it too.

This. Was. Epic.

This. Was. Epic. Did I say epic? Good. Let me say it again. Epic. Where is God? What is evil? Is life a wheel? Does it turn and crunch our bones and laughs in our faces when we dare to think we know it all? Do we ever learn from our mistakes? Can we? Is there in inherent wisdom to mankind passed on via threads of culture, or do we have to break our foreheads anew each time? And what about numbers? Does math matter? What is one man? What are two? Three? What about seven? Ten? Three thousand? Does the dynamic of society change simply because instead of a few, there are too many of us? And what is redemption? Is this a trick, God's apocalyptic finger mocking us? My head swirls with a thousand more questions after reading this, and the beauty of the answer is in the words of one of the characters: I don't know. We don't know. None of us know. We're afraid of this, we like to pretend, hold smart long talks about everything under the sun, and yet, it's very simple. We don't know.

I've read a lot of Stephen King's books. I would say, most of them, starting from when I was 16 (when I discovered him), and, well, without spilling my personal story here, culminating in The Stand, which I should've read a long time ago, but somehow never found the time. And, I think it's the best of his that I ever read. The characters are so beautifully flawed, you want to cry. That's what makes them real. Usually I write up a summary of the book in my reviews, but I don't even know where to begin, there are so many overlapping stories here…it's about humanity. Against the background of a sterile post-apocalyptic vista, with a bit of horror ("His face was a cratered red soup", anyone?) and a bit of fantasy, just the right mix. I'll try to summarize it for you. So. The world is swept by mutated flu "Captain Trips". It's a pandemic. Most people die, some live. Some more of those few die of stupid causes, later. Now, those few who stay alive see dreams. There are two kinds, of an old woman, Mother Abagail, and of the dark man, Randall Flagg. With our spilling too much beans here, you can guess. The world (or whatever remained of it) splits in two. Who will win? You can guess this too. But how? Oh, this is what the book is about. The stand. Will you take a stand for what you believe in? And, to twist you even more, are they all doomed? No matter what the outcome, what about the babies? The babies that will be born into the world, will they be immune to Captain Trips? Yes? No?

I think it took me 2 months to read this book, and I'm a relatively fast reader, but I had to stop, and think, and bite my lip. A lot. You will probably too, but you must read it. Set time aside for it. It's a masterpiece.

P.S.: Oh, and as a note, I haven't read the original version, I read only this one, the uncut one. I don't know how they compare, apart from the fact that 1980's have been modified to 1990's, etc. Just so you know.

Epic Masterpiece

The Stand is one of Stephen King's most popular and highest-rated books, and with good reason. It is an amazing and epic story, and in typical Stephen King style, there is so much interesting back-story that you become invested in the characters and plot, and you will not want to put it down. It is over a thousand pages long, but even so, I wished it would never end. The only reason I did not give it five stars is due to a recurring flaw in King's style, which is, in researching for a book, he will wonder what the word is for some rare thing, find JUST THE RIGHT WORD, and then over-use that word throughout the book, and subsequent books. So, a word that I have never heard in my entire life, now suddenly I am reading eleven times in one book. This book must have been written before he found the words "knee-hole" and "isinglass", though, because those are in almost every book he writes. Even so, this book is a masterpiece.

Grade 2-5 A dinosaur book collaboration between Arnold Lobel and Jack Prelutsky sounds almost too good to be true. And that's the case with this book, which has good intentions but doesn't quite carry through with them. No problem with Lobel's illustrations, which combine just the right amount of fantasy and realism to capture a child's imagination. It's Prelutsky's verse which is the detractor here. True, some of the poems are rollicking and fun, such as these lines describing Deinonychus: ``Ferocity was its predominant trait,/ its habits were purely predacious,/ it ate what it caught, and it caught what it ate/ in the days of the early Cretaceous.'' But for many of these poems, much of the verse seems confined by the subject matter, as if Prelutsky were afraid to let his imagination enhance what he considers factual information. Sadly, some of the information he reiterates about dinosaurs is out of date; the idea of small-brained, prehistoric plodders doomed for extinction is no more. Prelutsky would do well to get hold of a copy of Bakker's Dinosaur Heresies (Morrow, 1986) and update his perception of herbivores and Sauropods, in particular. Prelutsky writes fun poems for children; he has a few dozens of book out.
This one is by far the best - a combination of funny dinosaur poems with illustrations by Arnold Lobel. And the songs can be sung to the familiar tunes of nursery rhymes! Try the first one, "Tyrannosaurus Was a Beast," to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Your kids will love it - mine are in their 20s now, and still remember various poems!

My son was given this book 26 years ago--the best dinosaur book ever. Wonderful read aloud. The classic Prelutsky poems will become favorites. Your little one will know them by heart and in turn will also know every detail of each dino!!

I really enjoy Tony Hillerman's work

I really enjoy Tony Hillerman's work. I read most of his books years ago (probably like 20 years ago) and decided to re- read one that was coming up as free for my Kindle. Well I got completely back into it and I am on his fourth book now. All of his books take place on a Navajo reservation in New Mexico and the main characters are Lt. Joe Leaphorn and Sgt. Jim Chee of the Tribal Police. There are lot's of references to different Navajo ceremonies and customs which I find very interesting. They are a bit dated in that there were no cell phones or computers when these were written, but they are still good and still kept my attention all of the way through...

This is the second Tony HIllerman book that I have read and it was a gripping story. I just finished it this morning. My husband and I like to read together and this has been a great series for us since our daughter began teaching on the Navajo reservation. We have found Hiillerman's writing to be excellent, holding our attention to the very last. He is very descriptive and uses imagery very well. It has been extremely interesting to learn a lot more about the Native American cultures (as each tribe actually has its own). The challenging thing about reading his work is that there are so many unfamiliar words that are related to the cultures that we have to slow down to absorb a lot of it. My brother-in-law recommended this to us and I would recommend it to anyone else, too.

Very Well Done Book

Tony Hillerman's "Dance Hall of the Dead" is a very well done book. The writing is really well done, Joe Leaphorn has been nicely fleshed out from the first book, and the dichotomy in world views he's presenting is darn interesting. About the only thing I can ding is that the mystery is fairly obvious from pretty near the beginning. But, still, it's a very well done, enjoyable book. I rate it at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

At the outset of his career, al-Muwaffaq spent a brief period in the presence of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani. Under the Shaikh, then in the ninetieth year his life, he studied the Mukhtasar [Compendium] of al-Kharaqi at the level of understanding and meticulous scrutiny.

Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir completed his earthly life shortly after that, so al-Muwaffaq turned to the Shaikh of the Hanbalis and the leading jurist of 'Iraq, Nasih al-Islam Abu 'l-Fath Nasr ibn Fityan ibn Matar an-Nahrawani, well-known as Ibn al-Muna (A.H. 477-564). Under him he studied the jurisprudence of the school of Imam Ahmad [ibn Hanbal]. After four years in Baghdad he returned to Damascus and there he preoccupied himself with the composition of his great commentary (al-Mughni) on al-Kharaqi's Mukhtasar

Well there are barley any books on Hanbali Fiqh in English so this book is a great place to start. This book talks about what the Hanbali fiqh is through one of the greatest Hanabli Sages, Imam Muwaffaq. The book goes over pretty much one needs to know about his fiqh. This would be fasting, how to pray, trade and etc. The book is a great read, it isn't too long and it's easy to understand. There are some things that should be noted. Mukhtar Holland passed away before a revision of the book could be done. A piece of paper will be sent with the book. A couple of things were translated wrong but on the piece of paper it tells you how it should have been translated. To my knowledge it was only two or three things.

The book is great for those interested in the Hanbali Fiqh. It is a beginners book but certain things don't have clarification. For example when grasping the hands for prayer it is under the naval but the fingers aren't laced like the Hanafis but more of a grabbing manner. Things like this were not discussed but I feel that is what the more advanced books are for.

I wanted to add something new in after covering part of this book with a Hanbali teacher. There is a something really major to note that if the reader does not have a strong (VERY STRONG) background in Hanbali Fiqh and in Arabic one might take this the complete opposite direction. For example in this commentary it talks about that raising the finger 7 times in Tasshud while the Hanbali thought on this is to raise the finger and not put it down until the end of prayer. However the way it is worded in the book makes you think that the index finger must be raised 7 times while the background information is Mabbab if I am not mistaken meaning not to raise it up and down.

Nice little gift....

Who doesn't like herbs? THE MEANING OF HERBS is not at all about actually growing herbs. So, if your looking for a gardening book try THE COMPLETE BOOK OF HERBS by Lesley Bremness or RODALE'S ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS.
THE MEANING OF HERBS is filled with fun factoids and trivial tales that may or may not be true. For example, "Early herbalists prescribed oregano to those who 'are given to too much sighing' and enraged bears were believed to calm themselves by chewing on oregano bushes." This may be, but knowing where bears come from and the origin of oregano, I suspect the bears in question discovered the oregano cure quite by accident in someone's cultivated herb patch (probably right over there in the Great Smokies). And of course, some human must have been around to observe and record the enraged bear as he became becalmed by chewing oregano leaves. (Wonder what enraged him to begin with? Could it be he got into the gardener's bee hive and tried to eat oregano flower honey?).
THE MEANING OF HERBS will make a nice party favor, thank-you gift, or a small present for a friend. Filled with somewhat amusing and interesting anectdotes about herbs (and bears) as well as lots of pretty drawings, it's sure to send a warm and positive message.

Not Worth the Tree that Gave it's Life

This book is not for someone who actually wants to know how an herb has been used in the past, despite the fact that it promises to provide this information in the title. Not organized alphabetically, no glossary, and the information is as incomplete and inaccurate as possible while still using up valuable paper. Most of us know something about the lore of the Mustard Seed and spiritual faith, these authors didn't even mention that, but instead said, "mentioned in the bible," without even one specific reference. The photos and nice binding are the best part, but not even good enough to be clipped for another use. Don't buy this book unless you are looking for a greeting card for someone named Rosemary that doesn't have above a 6th grade education.

Perfect Lil Coffee Table Book!

So I purchased this book, along with its sister book "The Meaning of Flowers," as I had come across it at a friends home, and found it to be charming. The information it presents isn't necessarily for someone interested in learning about herb gardening, or even which herbs compliment certain foods. As the title mentions, its more centered around myth and folk lore. I purchased it as a coffee table book for guest to peruse, and find cutesy little stories in connection with their favorite herb or flower. With that in mind, you may find it to be nice as well. I was also thinking the taste would be horrible, but it is actually pretty good tasting juice

I thought this diet would be harder to follow than it is. The beginning of making the juices is definitely time consuming so I make a large batch that will last about 2-3 days at a time and it helps make it easier to do. It took me a little bit to get used to the juicer as it isn't the same as a blender for ease of operation. I was also thinking the taste would be horrible, but it is actually pretty good tasting juice.
